Royal Gunpowder Mills Unveils An Explosive Events Calendar For 2015

Royal Gunpowder Mills

Royal Gunpowder Mills, Waltham Abbey Essex, has unveiled its 2015 events calendar. With a fantastic variety of activities full of family-friendly fun, Royal Gunpowder Mills has something for all the family to enjoy.

Reopening again for February half term, 14 - 22 Feb, the explosive events calendar begins with a very exiting Half Term Horrors.

This year's 2015 highlights include: VE Celebration 2 – 4 May, a weekend of WWII re-enactments, remembrance and celebration. Visitors can expect WWII military vehicles and incredible air displays, including a Mustang and the legendary Spitfire (weather permitting), as well as street parties, music, dancing, theatrical performances and food from the Home Front period.

The Heritage Steam Day, 17 May, is not to be missed. Explore the technology of steam power with more than 50 scale steam traction engines representing the best of Victorian and Edwardian engineering. All engines will be in steam on both days and parade for visitors along the half kilometre road. Children and adults can enjoy a leisurely ride on them too.

We welcome back Laredo 23 – 25 May, the Wild West living history troupe, who will re-create a frontier gold mining town giving it a really authentic feel , talk to the townsfolk and visit the General Store, Bath House, Land Registry, Mining Depot and Saloon . The highlight of the weekend is the shootout between the desperate bandits and towns' people trying to protect their hard earned gold. Realistic action, plenty of shooting and dynamite explosions make this an incredible spectacle.

The annual Fayre Time Festival, 19-20 September, is another bright spark in the Royal Gunpowder Mills calendar. Expect a celebration of History, Folklore and Fantasy bringing together Historians, Re-enactors and Live Action Role-players. There will be talks by Historic Writers and Writers of Fantasy and Science Fiction, displays in the main arena from Vikings, Knights, Men-At-Arms and Soldiers of the Second World War as well as battles between Humans, Dwarves, Elves, Goblins and Orcs!

Royal Gunpowder Mills has plenty of fantastic family fun scheduled for the school holidays with an Explosive Easter and Easter Egg Hunt as well as lots of interactive experiences on the Secret Spooky Island with Spy Kids during spring half term.

The summer is to be packed full of activities with a summer long of Arts and Science Adventures during the Family Festival, 23 July – 31 Aug.

With spooky happening planned at the Haunted Mills, the autumn makes Royal Gunpowder Mills a place to bring the whole family with the Guy Fawkes Festival and Fireworks there is lots of thrilling things to see and do.

This year we are also launching our new railway passenger rides on our bigger 2.6ft track; this compliments our mini 7in gauge railway and will allow visitors to ride up into the northern reaches of the site on a train for the first time.
