This summer marks five decades since the tiny landlocked mountain kingdom of Bhutan opened its borders to tourism. If you are keen to explore how much – or how little – it has changed over the years, you can plan the perfect trip with World Expeditions…
Bhutan Cultural Journey
Packed with varied day walks and cultural experiences, this two-week itinerary blends spectacular scenery and timeless landscapes without the commitment to extended trekking. Highlights include: sightseeing in the historical town of Paro and the capital city of Thimpu; seeing the iconic 'Tiger's Nest' Taktsang Monastery; exploring the ancient fort monasteries of Dzongs; journeying the beautiful Gangtey Valley and crossing the Dochu La & Shertang La passes for breathtaking views; and taking in the rich cultural heritage and local hospitality.
Bhutan Cultural Journey with World Expeditions (13 days) departs on various dates, from September to April.
Bhutan High Trails
Trek into the heartland of Bhutan – the only carbon-negative country in the world! – in pristine wilderness, across a series of 5,000-metre high passes and underneath the sacred summit of Chomolhari ('Mountain of the Goddess'), which has only been reached by a handful of climbers over the years. Beneath a constant backdrop of snow-capped peaks, the trip follows forest trails and camps in alpine meadows, with time spent in Paro and capital Thimphu, pure and rich in natural splendour, cultural vibrancy and ancient 'dzongs' (fort monasteries).
Bhutan High Trails with World Expeditions (18 days) departs in April, September and October.
Bhutan Explorer & Jambay Lhakhang Festival
Bhutan is well known for its untouched wilderness, rich Buddhist culture and a history steeped in mystic and legend. This trip encompasses all the 'must see' highlights of both western and central Bhutan and a unique insight into Bhutan's culture, as it takes place during Jambay Lhakhang in autumn. This hugely popular religious festival is known for two special events, 'Mewang' (where locals run underneath a flaming gate with burning grasses falling on their heads) and 'Tercham' (where dancers with their faces covered by masks perform a dance completely naked).
Bhutan Explorer & Jambay Lhakhang Festival with World Expeditions (12 days) departs in October.
Snowman Trek Exploratory with Victor Saunders
Following his successful trek with World Expeditions to Pakistan earlier this year, renowned British mountaineer and former chair of the Alpine Club Victor Saunders heads to Bhutan in 2024 for one of the world's most challenging yet rewarding treks: amid a constant backdrop of 7,000m peaks across the backbone of Bhutan, the Snowman Trek is undertaken by only a handful of trekkers each season. The trek accesses Lunana, the most remote region of the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon, where tiny Buddhist monasteries and secluded villages remain isolated for many months of the year.
NEW! Bhutan Snowman Trek with Victor Saunders with World Expeditions (27 days) departs 8 October 2024
