What to See, Do and Eat in Tenerife on Easter

Tenerife Tourism Corporation

Tenerife, the largest of Spain's Canary Islands, is gearing up to host its popular Easter celebrations. From enchanting re-enactments to elaborate processions, the island's 'Holy Week' offers visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Tenerife's rich traditions.

Among the many Easter festivities scattered across the island, the northern town of La Laguna stands out due to its long tradition – it is in fact the oldest Holy Week (“Semana Santa”) in the Canary Islands.

Easter in La Laguna

The main highlight of Easter in La Laguna is the solemn yet spectacular religious processions that depict the Passion of Christ, which wind through the town's cobbled streets from Good Friday to Easter Sunday. Adorned with intricate floral arrangements and accompanied by mournful music, these processions offer visitors a glimpse into the religious fervour of the locals. The Magna Procession is one of the most important ones in the town, attracting both locals and visitors alike.

Beyond La Laguna

While La Laguna takes centre stage during Easter, other towns in Tenerife also offer unique celebrations and events. In Santa Cruz, the island's capital city, visitors can experience a blend of traditional and contemporary Easter festivities, including concerts, art exhibitions and street performances.

Coastal towns like Puerto de la Cruz boast their own charm, with beachside processions and lively gatherings adding to the festive atmosphere; while in the southern area of Adeje, one of the most popular Easter celebrations is La Pasión de Adeje; a re-enactment where actors and residents depict Christ's last few hours.

When the parades are not taking place, the southern town of Guía de Isora showcases a colourful botanic display, dubbed 'Floral Easter'. During the four-day event, the town's streets burst with handcrafted floral displays depicting Christ's journey to crucifixion.

Culinary delights

No Easter celebration in Tenerife would be complete without indulging in the island's food scene. From traditional dishes like “potaje de vigilia” (a hearty chickpea stew) and “sancocho” (salted fish with potatoes), to sweets such as “torrijas” (Spanish style French toast), visitors can have a feast for their senses during Easter.
