Visit Winchester

Winchester is a picturesque city boasting beautiful historic buildings, lush green open spaces, and elevated positions, all providing the perfect backdrops for your photographs. Here, we suggest some special places to capture magical moments to share with your friends and followers.

The magnificent Winchester Cathedral has inspired many writers, artists, and film producers. Its façade is iconic, but there are other special places to get that Instagram-worthy picture. Head to the right of the Cathedral's imposing west front, to the narrow pedestrian Curle's Passage. This leads through a buttress from the outer to the inner close and creates a striking frame for portraits.

Dean Garnier's Garden, a hidden gem situated in the Inner Close of Winchester Cathedral, is a tranquil and beautifully planted walled garden standing on the site of the monks' dormitory that was once part of this medieval site.

At the Winchester Science Center and Planetarium, you can capture the stars and planets during a stargazing event in the South Downs National Park, an International Dark Sky Reserve. During the day, you can enjoy stunning views, rolling hills, and the unique nature of the South Downs National Park. Step inside, to take some extra special pictures. Snap an explosive selfie as science Inspirers bring science to life with huge 'don't try this at home' demos in Science Live. Capture a fun family moments and question perception with the optical illusion created by the Little Big Room.

You can't help but be snap happy on a trip to Marwell Zoo. However, it's not just the animals that are photogenic. Throughout the 140-acre park, there are many beautiful backdrops as nature changes season by season.

If you want to get the best selfie with lots of animals in view, head to the Wild Explorers boardwalk. For naturalistic photographs of animals, head to the tropical house and walk through aviaries.

Back in the city centre, if you're looking for a great aerial shot, head up St Giles of St Catherine's hills or the top of the Westgate Museum. Located at the top of the High Street, this is a surviving fortified medieval city gateway. For a 360-degree view of the city book a tower tour of Winchester Cathedral.

For perfect pictures with a floral backdrop in spring, head to Kingsgate Village for fabulous blossoms and wisteria. In summer you'll find an abundance of hydrangeas in the Cathedral Inner Close and a sea of lavender at Peninsular Barracks sitting pretty. The Water Meadows to the edge of the city centre are beautiful all year round, but especially in Autumn when they once inspired the poet Keats.
