Martinhal Lisbon Oriente opened summer 2023 as the newest luxury riverside hotel in Lisbon's contemporary Park of Nations neighborhood, marking an important new chapter for the Martinhal brand, which is already renowned for its collection of hotels and resorts in Portugal's top destinations across Lisbon and the Algarve. Embracing Martinhal's profound connection to the local arts since the brand's inception, esteemed Portuguese artists have been handpicked to create an art gallery throughout the newly opened property, with emerging and talented names such as Kruella D'Enfer, Graça Paz, Pedro Batista, Bordalo II, Vasco Águas and Tamara Alves, among many others.
Cultural heritage is celebrated across the meticulously designed communal and residential spaces, including trash art installations like the “Lighted Koala” and “Lighted Spider” which are made with neon-LED lights and repurposed trash. Created by Lisbon's most renowned urban artists, Bordalo II, he transformed trash and unwanted objects into striking animal-inspired sculptures, depicting the interplay between nature and human consumption, and raising awareness about the importance of sustainability and the detrimental effects of overconsumption.
Contemporary artist, Graça Paz, was invited to curate a sequence of 20 unique art pieces named “Sacred Lands'' (in Portuguese, “Lugares”). The collection is all related by a central theme that tells a story of discovering the sanctity of a place, following a contemplative journey as one walks along the corridors. Graça's work is primarily focused on geometric abstract forms, combining textile design and the vibrancy of bold acrylics.
Portuguese visual artist and illustrator Kruella d'Enfer (whose relationship with Martinhal runs deep and whose work can be seen throughout Martinhal Chiado as well) was invited to join the select group of artists to produce specific pieces of art for Martinhal Lisbon Oriente. She transformed the internal murals in all the elevator lobbies in the building. Her genius led her to transform all 19 floors into one enormous mural named “The Sea, The Sky and Everything in Between”, applying her distinctive style, using contrasting colors and geometric shapes to evoke a deep sense of wonder and depict the diverse layers of life.
Hotel rates start from €165 per night in a studio apartment, based on 2 adults sharing on a self-catered basis (room-only).
