Undercastle Cottage

The luxury fairytale Undercastle Cottage in the New Forest National Park has teamed up with a local nature enthusiast who has built a Nature Hide on his land for viewing, filming, and photographing badgers. It’s rare to see badgers up close in the wild, and you’re almost guaranteed to see them here as there have only been three nights that the badgers haven’t appeared in the past year. The hide is set up with gimbals (for people to bring their cameras), chairs, electricity, tea/coffee, toilet, etc., so there’s no slumming it!

The accommodation is at Undercastle Cottage (sleeps 6, two double bedrooms in the main cottage plus a further ensuite twin in the Fishing Lodge). There's 2,500m of private fishing from the garden on the Hampshire Avon River, reputed to be one of the best fly and coarse fishing rivers in the UK, and there’s an option for 1:1 fishing tuition from £150 per half day.

The cottage is firmly at the luxury end of the market, laden with antiques, comfortable beds with handmade mattresses and sofas to sit and watch the National Park’s famous free-roaming ponies, donkeys and deer plus kingfishers and wild otters playing in the river.

There’s also a great gastro pub up the lane for easy suppers or a chef who can come in to cook for you.

Tailor-made breaks cost from £1,300 for 3 nights with private fishing and one night in the Hide from www.undercastlecottage.co.uk. Call 01428 717000

Notes to Editor

Undercastle Cottage takes full advantage of its surroundings deep in the woods of the New Forest National Park. Set on the banks of the crystal clear chalk stream waters of the Hampshire Avon River, with 2500m of private fishing on one of the best coarse and fly fishing rivers in the country famed for its large Barbel, Chub, Pike, Salmon, and Trout. Wild otters and birds frequent the river, and the National Park’s free-roaming ponies, donkeys, and deer often appear at the garden gate. The large sun terrace is home to a BBQ and plenty of garden furniture to while away the days, and there’s a rowboat, paddle board and kayak for guests to use.

Inside, the cottage is filled with antiques and beautiful furniture which stands on heated stone floors under vaulted ceilings. The living room has a large inglenook fireplace and log burner, a TV (with dongle), a DVD player and board games. There is one king-size bedroom and one double bedroom in the main house. Plus, an additional ensuite twin bedroom with a TV and hospitality tray a few steps across the sun terrace in the separate Fishing Lodge, which also has a sun terrace overlooking the river – perfect for elderly parents or older children wanting their own space.

Forest walks and cycle paths run from the door, and golf, horse riding, good-eating pubs (one within a 20-minute walk) and restaurants nearby.

Within a short drive is the Elizabethan manor house at Breamore, New Forest Water Park, New Forest Wildlife Park, Snowtrax dry ski slope and Beaulieu Palace House, Abbey and National Motor Museum are great for all ages. The cathedral city of Salisbury to see the Magna Carta and retail therapy in the city’s swish boutiques is just six miles away, and Stonehenge is not much further.

Paultons Park – home of Peppa Pig World, Longdown Activity Farm and Adventure Wonderland- is a big hit for little ones, and it’s less than a half-hour drive south to blue-flag award, golden sandy beaches, Highcliffe Castle, cliff-top walks and King Henry VIII’s coastal fortress, Hurst Castle. Allow a full day for visiting the Isle of Wight from Lymington, Corfe Castle, Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
