Welcome to our series, “TravMedia's Travel Writer of the Week," where we highlight an active journalist or editor within the TravMedia community. We have so many amazingly talented, successful, and inspirational professionals in our midst — let's meet Laura Beausire.
Where are you based?
I live in a tiny town just outside Boulder, Colorado.
What outlets do you write for? Who is your audience? What are your travel specialties?
My work has appeared in Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Wine Enthusiast, Hemispheres, Food & Wine, Shondaland, Fodor's, and a bunch of other publications. I'm always looking for new outlets as well.
I like to cover a wide range of travel topics, from cruise reviews and updates on ski resorts to wine and food adventures, hiking and outdoor stories, family travel, behind-the-design hotel pieces, and interviews with fascinating people.
Are you in-house or freelance (or both)?
Freelance
What are your professional pet peeves?
It's unfortunate when I'm asked for a confirmed assignment prior to a press trip because it's usually not possible. I work with editors who want me to tell compelling stories based on authentic experiences.
It's also discouraging when press trips are so jam-packed with things I “should” see that I don't have a little pocket of time here or there to wander freely and discover unexpected things on my own. That always feels like a lost opportunity.
In your past professional life you were …
An art gallery director and university design history teacher. I also worked on historic preservation projects.
Where would you like to return to?
So many places! I'd be happy to go back to Ireland, the UK, Norway, Finland, or Australia.
What's on your bucket list?
Africa
Where do you travel for fun?
My husband is from New Zealand, so we especially love to spend time there when we can. Closer to home, we never get tired of exploring different parts of Colorado. And we have a little family cabin on a lake in northern Wisconsin that's really relaxing.
What advice would you give your younger professional self?
Don't be afraid to dream big. And then dream even bigger.
What nugget would you like to add that we haven't touched on?
I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to travel as much as I do, and I really value the connections I make along the way.
For me, the best travel experiences are those that help me to learn, and challenge me to re-think my preconceived notions.
