Heidi Ski Reports Soaring Demand for Self-Catered Holidays and Short Ski Breaks

Heidi
  • Bookings for self-catering up by 80%
  • This figure goes up to 110% in France!
  • Short ski breaks increased by 61%

Heidi has reported that British ski enthusiasts are at the forefront of a transformative shift in ski holiday preferences. Heidi's bookings for self-catering apartments have skyrocketed by 80%, with a staggering 110% increase in France alone. Shorter breaks are significantly on the 'up' too by 61%.

Marcus Blunt, Co-Founder of Heidi, comments, "It's clear the cost-of-living pressures haven't deterred Brits from hitting the slopes. Instead, they've evolved their approach, seeking the most economical means to indulge their passion. Our bookings show they are favouring self-catered apartments which offer more value and freedom.”

Whilst other options, including chalets, thrived in the 80s and 90s, their appeal has seen a decline. The post-Brexit landscape, combined with economic factors, has altered the workforce on the slopes. Less young UK workers, perhaps seeking gap year opportunities, are available, while hiring from the EU adds significant costs. The ripple effect means increased holiday prices, pushing travellers towards more versatile options.

Alongside opting for self-catered apartments, another trend reported by Heidi is the rise in short ski breaks which have risen by over 60% year-on-year. Marcus continued: “We suspect the uptake in shorter ski breaks is partly because it's a good way to save money on a ski holiday - but it also gives skiers maximum flexibility if they are short on time or annual leave and just want to squeeze in a quick trip.”

Other tips for saving money on a ski holiday include:

  1. Opt for a smaller ski resort - Booking a smaller ski resort connected to a major one ensures you get the best of both worlds - vast skiing terrains without the hefty price tag.
  2. Be flight savvy: Saturdays are prime flight days. For more affordable options, consider flying out on a different day of the week.
  3. Re-evaluate lift passes: A significant chunk of a ski holiday budget often goes on lift passes. However, beginners may not need one right away. Exploring resorts that offer free access to nursery slope draglifts can be a game-changer.
