Martinez – a unique members lounge & cocktail bar located in a stylish loft space, furnished with touches of mid-century and deco, overlooking bustling Greek Street, is forging the way to bring a revival to Soho.
Spearheading the move is Maurice Marshall – formerly of Sketch, Cuckoo, The Green Room at Maddox, and one of the team that launched Fabric, among his many ventures within hospitality. He comments, “It is important to Martinez that we are an inclusive members space; ensuring one of London's most colourful and vibrant neighbourhoods' creative character can thrive, aided and abetted by events and connections that we generate.”
Bringing Studio 54 vibes to Soho, Maurice Marshall has collaborated with three of Martinez's Committee members to form a collective that's behind the cool new London LGBTQ club night, HOTEL@49A. Embracing the maverick spirit and candour of its locale, Martinez is home to Soho's Queer Private Members night for London's spirited queer community, coming together to bring sex and style back to Soho. With a sensational Disco House bi-monthly Saturday night line-up and the hottest dancers, keeping party people entertained all night. The HOTEL@49A collective has a comparable mission to Maurice Marshall: to resurrect Soho, whilst also creating a safe space for Soho's fabulous, disparate, and unique folk, that extends beyond just the nightlife.
Maurice adds, “I've always been taken by the plethora of colourful characters and their antics in Soho. This is their stomping ground. Now that the pandemic is over many have forgotten the words of kindness and compassion that were bandied around. I'm determined hold on to and express those sentiments. Those are the qualities I look out for in our members. That and a healthy dose of good banter. Everything else is icing on the cake.”
Martinez hosts an eclectic variety of evenings from Jazz Flavour nights – with DJs playing the finest jazz, sometimes rare groove, disco, and soul, to the sell-out Cabaret Martinez, the inimitable Singing Psychic show, and resident DJs playing mixes of past and contemporary dance classics. Members can attend most events for free. For some of the large events, paid tickets are available to non-members, and our members are afforded generously discounted tickets. There are also Q&A presentations and podcasts with individuals that make up the committee.
Opening in the evenings, Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm until late, Martinez has an amazing and beautifully executed range of cocktails coupled with a variety of individuals to sample them. Expect engaging conversations over forgotten and modern classic cocktails, fine food and exceptional entertainment (from behind the decks, on stage or sat next to you), all inside one of London's discerning spaces; hidden in plain sight. Like historical Soho bar spaces to which Martinez doffs its cap, The Colony Room, and The Establishment we are a space for those that challenge the standard narrative with many new stories playing out, side by side.
Following recent years of theatrical and complex mixology, the Martinez team embraces the bold simplicity and zeal from which cocktail making originates, with 'The Forgotten Classics' list featuring Charlie Chaplin: Apricot, Sloe Gin, Lime; Champagne Cocktail: Courvoisier Cognac, Brown Sugar, Aromatic Bitters, Curacao, Champagne; and Tuxedo #3; King of Soho Gin, Noilly Prat, Tio Pepe Fino Sherry, Maraschino, Absinthe, Bitters.
The hero cocktail – The Martinez - originating from the 1860s, Martinez showcases three classic variations of the iconic drink on its menu: The Original 1860's, with Old Duff Genever, with Old Tom Gin and with King of Soho Gin.
The food menu highlights the element of sharing amongst guests, offering a selection of delicious small plates, curated by Michelin-star chef Hervé Deville; perfect to accompany cocktails.
The Martinez lounge is also home to artistic talent, frequently hosting exhibitions amongst its thriving calendar of monthly events. Martinez has recently launched a curated showcase with two of Soho's most exciting artists, Robi Walters and Alfie Shiukai. X-MUSE & SOHO ART bringing a provocative and thoughtful presence to the room. Martinez launched its art series with the sensuous oil paintings of Tomás Baleztena, then a collection of prints from Steven Lazarides, and work from photographers Simon Webb and Sally Twigg – all delivering eye-catching and engaging works to the walls that reflect Soho's rich and colourful history. There are further exciting collaborations planned to grace the walls of Martinez this year – coming next, a Martinez Lounge themed exhibition from Soho-based Photographer, Ki Price.
The space is also available for private hire for members and non-members too. Memberships at Martinez are £300 for the year, with the option to pay in quarterly instalments of £75. The annual membership features a host of additions including a £75 bar tab. Martinez also encourages surrounding Soho habitués and workers to sign up to its Soho Neighbours scheme, receiving 6-weeks complimentary membership followed by a discounted full membership if they choose to join. Martinez also offers a series of member benefits with Notting Hill's The Laslett, and access to its neighbour at The House of St Barnabas.
