From spending the night in an art project to sleeping in tree houses or sea containers – there are plenty of unique overnight stay options in Saxony to discover. Here's a round-up of some of our favourites.
For art and design lovers
Not the classic hotel type and open to industrial/arty surroundings? Then Leipzig's “Meisterzimmer” is just the ticket. On site the city's “Spinnerei” arts hub, a former cotton mill now housing studios, galleries and workshops, the four Meisterzimmer apartments with large factory windows and high ceilings were all designed as spaces for artworks as opposed to rooms where art only serves as a piece of decoration. Perfect for design lovers and independent travellers who will enjoy the creative surroundings. Tip for architecture buffs: Head to Löbau about 60 miles east of Dresden, where the „Schminke House“ offers the exclusive opportunity to sleep in a modernist icon that was built in the early 1930ies by a local factory owner. The building, designed by Hans Scharoun, is mentioned in one breath with design icons such as Mies van der Rohe's Villa Tugendhat or Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye and features the famous „Frankfurt kitchen“, forerunner of the modern fitted kitchen, which guests can use.
For the romantic type
Try Saxony's palaces and castles to sleep in style and with a fairy-tale touch. Near Dresden, the very pretty Moritzburg Castle, located on a small island in a pond and surrounded by a beautiful park, offers five cottages by the water. The small houses are fully equipped holiday apartments and can accommodate up to four people. Another option just outside Dresden by the Elbe River are three cottages on the grounds of the gorgeous Pillnitz Palace and Park estate. Their secluded location in the large park offers maximum privacy. And if you want to have one of Saxony's most popular sights to yourself after closing time, check out Königstein Fortress, towering almost 250 metres above the Elbe River in the Saxon Switzerland region. Once the gates close for day visitors, guests in one of the two on-site apartments can explore the historic rock plateau in peace and quiet and find their own perfect romantic spot.
For sustainable and wellbeing holidays
Saxon Switzerland is also home to a unique eco-tourism project which transformed most of the village of Schmilka into an organic enclave for sustainable holidays. Easily reached by train from Dresden, it is a perfect base for hiking and guests can choose from various eco hotels, enjoy local and seasonal produce, including beer and bread, all made in the village or indulge in a special “full moon sauna ritual” in Schmilka's bathhouse with a sauna infusion made of local herbs. For a more upmarket wellness option, try the four-star superior hotel “Insel der Sinne” in a secluded lake-side location, featuring stylish rooms designed with natural materials, yoga and spa offerings. Tip: Enjoy leisury strolls through nearby Görlitz which, with its late Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance and Art Nouveau architecture, is easily one of Germany's most beautiful towns.
For families and adventurous types
Just north of Görlitz, visitors will find a very different type of accommodation in the shape of the tree houses of “Kulturinsel Einsiedel”. They are imbedded in the magical adventurous world of a legendary Slawic people called “Turisede” who had settled in this part of Saxony in Roman times. Each tree house has its own story and some of them accommodate up to six people. Great for families! Similarly, the “Bergheim” sea container accommodation in Schöneck, eastern Germany's largest skiing resort and a popular outdoor destination, will delight the kids. The modern and stylish container homes are built on the principles of the increasingly popular “tiny house” movement, using lots of recycled materials, and their location on the resort's skiing slopes makes for great views of the surrounding Vogtland region and plenty of options for outdoor adventures.
