The archipelago continues to lead as one of the best destinations for remote working. The Canary Islands are, on average, the destination that offers the greatest increase in savings capacity, depending on the income earned in the country of origin of the remote worker, according to Nomad List, the world reference portal for remote workers. Remote working from the Canary Islands could provide a higher savings capacity of 61% for an income of $50,000 USD compared to remote working in Madeira. For an income of $250,000 USD, this could be 38% of saving capacity, compared to the average of destinations such as Munich, Oslo, Copenhagen, Lyon, Marseille, Milan, or Naples. Since 2020, the Canary Islands has seen a huge increase in the arrival of digital and now, the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Trade of the Canary Islands, Yaiza Castilla, continues to encourage Brits/Irish to work remotely here this winter with the launch of a new promotional campaign focusing on workers facing a tense work environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic and affected by the current cost of living crisis. 27% of workers worldwide will leave their jobs in the next 12 months and 45% of them are applying for new jobs*. In the UK and Italy alone, 1.3 million employees have left their jobs in the first 9 months of 2021. While in Spain, 25% of employees want to change jobs in the next year and 51% are actively applying for other positions. In the United States in November 2021 alone, a record was reached as 4.5 million U.S. workers voluntarily resigned from their jobs, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This figure has reached more than 50 million since the beginning of 2021. The main reason cited was due to the lack of flexibility Companies that allow their staff to work remotely can hugely improve employees' work-life balance and flexibility and foster a better work environment. Remote workers can relocate to the best destinations where they can enjoy a better quality of life. The Canary Islands not only has the office with 'the best climate in the world' - a concept that has allowed the destination to climb positions in the ranking of the best locations in the world for teleworkers - but also the most favourable conditions for economic savings. Over the first 10 months of 2022, the Canary Islands welcomed 45,800 remote workers who spent an average of €3,171 euros per person per trip, almost three times above the expenditure made by the holiday tourist (€1,206) according to data from Nomad List. In 2021, the archipelago received almost 47,000 teleworkers, beating the target of 30,000 that Canary Islands Tourism set itself in five years. The United Kingdom is one of the top countries of origin of remote workers in the Canaries, accounting for 12% of all digital nomads welcomed to the archipelago in 2021. Brits are preceded only by Germany (27%), and followed by the Netherlands (10%), the Czech Republic (8%), the United States (6.6%), Spain (6.6%) and Ireland (5%). In its effort to continue attracting this type of tourist, Canary Islands Tourism has launched a new activity focused on twelve priority markets. The campaign revolves around the proposal: Enjoy the Canary Islands 'Aftertelework' and stay away from bad weather. Yaiza Castilla, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands explains “During the last months of 2020 and all of 2021 we have worked to put the Canary Islands on the teleworker map through rational arguments. For this reason, in this campaign, we wanted to build a new discourse that rides on rational arguments such as broadband, air connectivity or time compatibility, but that focuses on the motivational level, developing a communication concept on which the entire company will revolve: the #Aftertelework.' Minister Castilla continues, “This concept with which we want to tell you what you can do on the Islands once the working day is over, and you close the computer lid. Endless leisure plans in globally consolidated tourist micro-destinations and a range of outdoor activities in one of the best natural environments in all of Europe”, The campaign has an investment of 600,000 euros from REACT-EU funds and will run in November and December in the United Kingdom, Ireland Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, the Czech Republic, and Italy. *Adecco's report "Global workforce of the future 2022" focused on the employment market outlook for 2023, See what those already living and working in the Canary Islands had to say about their experiences below! |
