The much loved and celebrated Wild Harvest Seafood Festival in Mallacoota is on again this November and there are some new and interesting events on offer.
A special Whelk-om Dinner (see what we did there) will kick off the Festival on Friday 11 November from 5pm at Karbeethong Lodge, Mallacoota. This event celebrates the lesser known and underrated produce – the whelk - harvested from the waters surrounding Mallacoota.
Never heard of whelks? That's ok. We're here to help you through it. They are a type of sea snail, and form a motley crew alongside sea urchins, banded morwong and samphire which will all feature as part of this special dinner.
The menu is thoughtfully curated by renowned chef Stefano De Pieri of A Gondola on the Murray alongside chef, and Budawang Elder from the Yuin Nation, Noel Butler. Local wine and beer is seamlessly matched to the dishes by wine writer, Max Allen.
Indulge in the opening event dinner overlooking the stunning Mallacoota Lake and open your eyes and tastebuds to an array of undiscovered delicacies.
The Festival will take place from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 November. A fantastic array of events and activities planned including the ever popular seafood market, pop-up outdoor cinema programming, Sea Shanty Singing Workshops with The Grubby urchins, the Oysters and Champagne Twilight Cruise, Bush Foods walks and fishing clinics.
If you haven't booked your accommodation the Mallacoota Foreshore Holiday Park is offering event goers a special discount of 10% off the total booking price by using the code WHSF22.
A brand new accommodation option is available this year for Festival goers with special Glamping Packages that are sure to sell-out fast. Book a package and you'll get tickets to all the best Wild Harvest events. You just need to arrive, unpack the car and soak in the Festival atmosphere. How easy is that!
The event, which was created to highlight the region's unique abundance and variety of seafood, has not run since 2019. The 2020 bushfires and COVID restrictions did not see the festival proceed during this time, but event organiser Jodie York can't wait for the festival to run in 2022.
Jodie says the Wild Harvest Seafood Festival is a celebration of the natural fruits of the land and sea, and the indigenous custodians that have been connected with this land for thousands of years. “We can't wait to roll out the program this year,” she said.
Mallacoota is located in Victoria's far east and is surrounded by the stunning Croajingolong National Park, the pristine waters of the Mallacoota Inlet and roaring surf beaches.
