Immerse yourself in art in Sussex

This autumn brings exciting opportunities to see sensational art exhibitions in stunning rural Sussex, as Newlands House Gallery opens the doors to 'Lee Miller and Picasso' (10 September – 8 January 2023), in the beautiful setting of a converted Georgian townhouse, in the attractive market town of Petworth. 

'Lee Miller and Picasso' chronicles the extraordinary life of Vogue model turned war correspondent Lee Miller, a pioneer in Surrealist art, fashion and photojournalism, exploring Miller's relationship with Picasso and Picasso's accidental discovery of Sussex.

The setting of Newlands House Gallery makes for a unique experience, explains Artistic Director and Curator, Maya Binkin; “the dado rails, fireplaces, wooden floors and Georgian windows add up to an exciting but intimate exhibition environment which is totally unique. The proportions are domestic so viewers seeing art in this context can have a really special experience. This exclusive exhibition follows Newlands House Gallery's recent shows; Frank Auerbach: Unseen, Julian Opie, Ron Arad and its opening tribute to Helmut Newton in 2020.

Just one of many chances to be immersed in outstanding art while surrounded by the stunning scenery of the South Downs, and without the crowds of the capital, art lovers should be sure to make a beeline for Chichester's Pallant House Gallery to catch Glyn Philpot: Flesh & Spirit before it closes on 23 October, and the upcoming Sussex Landscape: Chalk, Wood & Water (12 November-23 April 2023), revealing how artists such as Turner, William Nicholson, Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, Ivon Hitchens, Eric Ravilious and Edward Burra have been inspired by the rolling hills and rugged cliffs which make up Sussex's landscapes.

Further art explorations in Chichester must include Oxmarket Contemporary, where modern exhibition space sits within a medieval deconsecrated church dating from the 13th Century. Free to enter, this is a destination for lovers of art, craft and design.

Close by see the art of Chichester Cathedral. Particularly known for a Marc Chagall stained glass window, here medieval and Victorian works sit beside the modern, and there's a regularly changing programme of exhibitions. Until February 2023, at The Novium Museum follow Chichester's 60 year journey to becoming a cultural destination with a celebration of artistic and cultural achievement across all art forms.
