Devon, UK: Nepal Far West Exploratory GHT will be our most remote trek in the Himalayas. It is even more off the beaten track than Upper Dolpo to Jomsom GHT in Mid West Nepal and Lunana Snowman trek in Bhutan.

In April 2022, we sent our international leader, Adrian Summers, and Nepalese guide, Galden Sherpa, to do a reconnaissance trek to the Humla District in Nepal's Far West region. They will head back in November 2022 to lead our Nepal Far West GHT Exploratory trek. This will be very much an exploratory trip in the true sense of the word.

Our trekking route follows remote river valleys in an anti-clockwise direction from the small town of Simikot to the Tibet border at Hilsa. The trail goes close to the unclimbed peaks of Chandi Himal. Before reaching these peaks, we turn off to the west into a side valley. We start ascending to our camp at Medoking at around 5,150m in the shadow of an un-named peak at 5,894m. The next day we cross Nying La pass at about 5,500m and descend to our camp at Nying Kuna.

On a rest day, we walk to a viewpoint to see the sacred Mount Kailash and the Holy Lake at Manasarovar. Our remote trek continues as we head west into the Sakya Khola valley located to the north of Limi Valley. Very little is known about this valley. It has been rarely visited by trekking or expedition groups. From Sakya Khola, we cross over a broad pass around 5,000m heading south to reach Halji village in the Limi Valley. We have another rest day and visit Halji's ancient monastery. We continue our journey on the traditional route along The Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) to Hilsa on the Tibet border. From there we get a jeep to Simikot and then flights back to Kathmandu via Nepalganj.

We have set up Google Maps for our Nepal Far West GHT Exploratory trek. As you can see this map shows the trekking trail and the campsites.

This is an opportunity to explore a very rarely-visited region on the border with Nepal and Tibet. Being adventurous is an essential requirement for anyone planning to join this group. We already have seven trekkers signed up so this departure is now guaranteed to run. We have decided to restrict the group size to only ten trekkers.

The Mountain Company's Managing Director Roland Hunter commented;

“Our exploratory trek to the Far West of Nepal came out of research during the Covid pandemic. It is refreshing to know that even in 2022 there are places in the Himalayas that very few foreigners have visited. This is a Himalayan region with many unclimbed and unnamed mountains. This trek is as remote as it gets! Road construction has decimated the classic The Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) in Nepal Far West. Yet, it is exciting for us to be involved in the development of GHT by launching one of the most off-the-beaten-track sections far away from roads.”

Trek on!
