San Montano Resort & Spa Reopens on 14 April for an Unforgettable Ischian Summer

San Montano Resort & Spa

From yoga retreats to boat excursions and trekking, Ischia is the ultimate natural escape in the Mediterranean

April 2022: San Montano Resort & Spa, the five star Ischian hotel that perches on Monte Vico, where once upon a time stood the Greek acropolis of Pithecusa, will reopen its doors on 14 April with a full calendar of new activities and events for the 2022 summer season.

Ischia has proven itself to be the ideal destination for travellers longing for a true green escape that offers real healing and wellness, with its geo-thermal energy and waters and mineral-rich earth. San Montano Resort & Spa is a favourite and well-kept secret amongst Italian travellers, with its expansive gardens, multiple natural pools, outdoor spa, and freshly-caught, locally-inspired cuisine.

New for 2022 are two new Junior Suites furnished in a classic yet minimal Mediterranean style, with white and blue hues, light fabrics and colourful majolica pottery. Also new for this year, is the work of renowned Neapolitan artist Antonio Nocera. For 2022, Nocera chose Pulcinella, a classical character originating from Neapolitan puppetry and commedia dell'arte in the 17th Century, as his theme for his 'Art meets Hospitality' collection, that will be on exhibition at the resort from 14 April. This year the resort will also host a two-day yoga retreat (6 – 8 May) hosted by instructor Viviana Ferrari.

Also new for 2022 is a boat trip to neighbouring islet Procida, Italy's Capital for Culture 2022, just a 15-minute boat ride from San Montano Resort & Spa. The excursion to this cat-shaped island starts with a dip in the crystal clear waters, followed by a walk through the lanes of the historic centre and a visit to the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, all accompanied by an expert guide. After an aperitivo at the Corricella Marina, guests return to the boat for a few final dives before sailing back to Ischia.

For lovers of the outdoors, days can begin with a wander through the thermal park, a moment in the sun in one of the resort's many open areas, a swim or meditative moment by the pools, and even a massage surrounded by the scent of lemon trees in the citrus grove, overlooking the Gulf of Naples.

Must-see gardens beyond the resort include the romantic Mortella Gardens, a botanical area with over 1700 different flora from around the world, with nightly live music, and the Ravino Gardens.

Surrounded by nature, guests can discover lesser-known paths and centuries-old vineyards with environmental guides who know every hidden corner of the island. Hiking itineraries include the Biancolella path, leading to vegetable gardens and vineyards overlooking the sea and ancient cellars carved into the rocks, and a walk among the 'Pizzi Bianchi' limestone rock formations that lead to the ancient Romanbaths of Cavascura, where guests can pause for a natural sauna. All hiking trails are accompanied by traditional lunches and wine tastings.

For those seeking a dose of adventure, there is no shortage of experiences to try. Highlights include snorkelling in the protected marine area, 'Kingdom of Neptune', amongst pirouetting dolphins; and the 'bioluminescent' night boat trip to take in the brightness of the seabed, guided by a marine biologist, followed by an evening snorkel under a starry sky in a pristine bay just a few miles from the coast.

Ischia offers a lot more than experiences in the great outdoors, however. This mystical island is a treasure chest of Greek history, from the avenues of the acropolis that now house the Acropoli Bar and the Mediterranean gardens, to the Museum of the excavations of Santa Restituta, a small archaeological jewel preserving ancient items recovered only in the 1950s. San Montano Resort & Spa can provide history walks guided by an expert art historian, where guests will also see the 'Cup of Nestor', on which is engraved the first fragment of poetry and one of the oldest texts written in Ancient Greek.

In early summer, rooms start from £280 per night for a Double Comfort Room overlooking the garden, on a B&B basis.

San Montano's Yoga Retreat starts from £900. The package includes a two night stay in a Standard Room, breakfast each day, two brunches and dinner on the first night, full access to the resort's multiple swimming pools, access to the wet spa, beach and pool towels, Wi-Fi, parking, complimentary shuttles to the San Montano beach and center of Lacco Ameno, complimentary shuttles at arrival and departure from the port of Ischia,  plus multiple daily yoga sessions led by Viviana Ferrari.
