Fun Under the 24-Hour Yukon Midnight Sun

Tourism Yukon

Yukon is the land of the Midnight Sun, where skies are glorious and summer light is endless. Life flourishes between May and August under hours of intense sunlight as the land hosts millions of migratory birds and explodes in wildflower blooms. On Summer Solstice, the sun never sets at the Arctic Circle—the further north one travels, the higher the sun and the longer the season of the Midnight Sun. All over the Yukon, summer is a busy time of festivals and outdoor play and visitors can enjoy the long days to drive, hike, paddle or just relax.

Visitors can make the most of the neverending daylight and experience these thrilling activities in the 80% pristine Canadian wilderness.

Paddle the mighty Yukon River

There's nothing quite like paddling the glistening-green Yukon river surrounded by the stunning raw beauty of northern nature. Spot wildlife like golden eagles, osprey, moose, and even grizzlies. A number of local vendors, including Dawson City River Hostel, Klondike River Adventure Tours, and North of Sherwood Guiding rent equipment and even offer expert-guided tours so visitors do not have to worry about their luggage.

Bike the Midnight Dome at midnight

Just five miles from Gold Rush Town Dawson City is the Midnight Dome. Named for the fact that for decades people have gathered at the top of this 877-metre (2911ft) hill to watch the Midnight Sun and the spectacular changing colours of the bright night sky. Marvel at the panoramic view of the city below, as well as the beauty of the Yukon River and Klondike Valleys. Observe Ogilvie Mountain Range in the distance. Renting a bike is easy. Riding it up the hill is for the more adventurous.

Hike National and Territorial Parks

Kluane National Park and Reserve is home to the world's largest non-polar ice fields and deep glacier-carved valleys. A hike to the summit of this UNESCO World Heritage Site is exhilarating. Another top trekking spot is Tombstone Territorial Park, a 1,367-square mile wilderness of peaks and permafrost formations, as well as unusual plants and flowers.

Cranberry Yoga and Creative Retreats

Perfectly positioned just outside of the Yukon's capital city Whitehorse lies Cranberry Lodge, an idyllic yoga retreat. Instructor Carolyne offers private and small group Hatha Yoga classes tailored specifically to each guest's ability. Visitors can enjoy a class at one with nature, under the Midnight Sun, surrounded by forests and mountains.

Play an evening round of golf

Dawson City Golf Club is a hidden gem located across the Yukon river and offers a beautiful nine hole course and driving range. Golfers can take advantage of the daylight and play a full 18 holes in the evening.

Join the National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations

Held annually on the solstice (21 June), National Indigenous Peoples Day is a Canada-wide event that recognizes and celebrates the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding achievements of Indigenous peoples across Canada. Everyone is invited to be a part of this national celebration to enjoy live music, artist demonstrations, traditional food, special ceremonies and much more. National Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated in communities across the Yukon.
