Here is Visit Lincoln's list of top vegan spots in the city to try out this January.  With a 40% increase in the number of vegans in the UK throughout 2021, plant-based options are increasing demand for diners. Now home to an unofficial 'Vegan Quarter', located in the historic Bailgate area, Lincoln has a growing number of free-from eateries with options great enough to tempt staunch meat eaters.

Café Shanti  

As one of Lincoln's few cafes dedicated to just vegan and vegetarian dishes, the family-run Café Shanti should be at the top of visitors' lists. Offering an eclectic menu of British and Nepalese food, Café Shanti offers a range of vegetable and meat alternative homemade dishes. For those new to vegan cuisine, the knowledgeable team will be on hand to recommend some tasty options. 

Ole Ole Tapas Bar  

Situated in the grounds of the Lawn, Ole Ole offers sangria, tapas and an extremely welcoming atmosphere.  The rustic interiors are traditional, bringing a real sense of Spain (and sunshine) to the centre of Lincoln. The authentically Spanish menu features a range of meat-free dishes, the majority of which are also suitable for vegans. Popular vegan small plates include vegetable paella, roasted croquettes and delicious oven-baked cauliflower florets – seasoned with southern Spanish spices and quince syrup. 

Cosy Club 

Situated in the original 1879 Corn Exchange building, the Cosy Club is one of The Cornhill Quarter's gems. This new bar and restaurant celebrates the building's unique heritage through the restoration of its original features.  Packed with personality, Cosy Club expertly combines vintage nostalgia with modern fine dining. Suitable for either a boozy brunch or a family-friendly meal, Cosy Club is renowned for the quality of its food and drink. 40% of the restaurant's menu is suitable for vegetarians, and there is an entire section dedicated to vegan and plant-based options. 

Pimento Tea Rooms 

As Lincoln's oldest vegetarian and vegan restaurant, Pimento Tea Rooms is an essential visit during a food-filled staycation. Located in the Cathedral Quarter, the restaurant has occupied this space for over 30 years and is a staple part of Steep Hill. The building itself dates back to the 18th century, with five rooms to explore inside, as well as an outdoor seating area. Pimiento offer a selection of breakfast, lunch and light snack options, making it the perfect pit stop on the way up the hill.  

Rising Café  

Located inside the Alive Church, Rising Café serves up delicious homemade food, desserts and hot drinks. This welcoming café offers everything from salads to sandwiches, to full cooked meals, with menu prices starting at just £2. Every penny earned at Rising Café goes directly to charity. Run by previously homeless and substance-addicted men and women, 100% of proceeds go directly towards funding their recovery, and that of many others around the country, through the charity work of Betel UK. 

Slow Rise 

Initially a mobile business, Slow Rise secured its first premises in July 2020. Specialising in pizzas, it offers a range of vegetarian and vegan options. Freshly made onsite, the delicious slow proved dough is hand-stretched and topped with the freshest ingredients. Options range from the traditional to the innovative, with the truffle mushroom pizza coming highly recommended. If diners have room for pudding, the restaurant offers a range of homemade tiramisus that can be made vegan on request. 

200 Degrees Coffee Shop  

Open since 2019, 200 degrees is in an independent coffee shop and barista school located in the bustling Cornhill Quarter. Serving up handcrafted food and artisan coffee roasted just an hour away in Nottingham, 200 degrees has quickly become a favourite spot in Lincoln. Takeaway is available but it is recommend to dine in to enjoy the vibrant, and relaxed atmosphere. 200 degrees has a range of dairy-free milks and vegan sandwich options available. All the food is freshly prepared on-site throughout the day, using produce from local suppliers.

Via the LNER railway line, Lincoln is just a 1 hour and 55-minute trip away from London King's Cross. Trains depart every two hours. Tickets start from £36 for a day return.
