Whether you want to discover the bustle of the UNESCO World Heritage centre of Naples or bathe in the sun on the Sardinian coastline, follow in his footsteps.
Episode One: Southern Sardinia
Offering a rustic and romantic feel, South Sardinia is the perfect destination for couples looking for an authentic Italian break. More rugged and untouched than the northern parts of the island, South Sardinia offers many offshore adventure spots, including coves only accessible by sea.
The capital, Cagliari, is an idyllic spot for a walk, with narrow residential streets adorned with colourful flowers. Head to the busier Stampace district for an evening meal, where Citalia recommends trying a Cannonau red wine in a backstreet trattoria.
Citalia (citalia.com) has a seven-night B&B stay at the four-star Costa dei Fiori from £699 per person. The price includes return flights from London Gatwick and complimentary private airport transfers. Price based on May 2022 departures.
Episode Two: Naples
As the ancient capital of Campania, Naples is one of the world's oldest cities. In the shadows of Mount Vesuvius and with the ruins of Pompeii nearby, the city centre is also a popular place to visit for history-lovers. Considered to be the birthplace of pizza, visitors should not leave the city without sampling a slice of Neapolitan, as well as one of the Campanian wines.
To escape from the bustle of the city, the picturesque islands of Ischia and Capri can be visited as a day trip from the city or to make for a longer trip. Citalia recommends taking the funicular from Capri's Marina Grande to the Piazzetta, for the best views of the island and surrounding bay.
Citalia (citalia.com) has a four-night B&B stay at the four-star Hotel Paradiso Naples from £1139 for a family of three sharing. The price includes return flights from London Gatwick and complimentary private airport transfers. Price based on May 2022 departures.
Episode Three: Calabria
Situated in the “toe” of the Italian boot-shaped peninsula, Calabria is known for its rugged mountains, sprawling beaches, and colourful cliff-side houses. Inland, you will find the Sila National Park, where the almost 2,000m-high mountains and glistening blue waters make it the perfect location for hiking. Along the coast, visitors will find dramatic rock formations alongside the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Although Calabrian cuisine is known as la cucina povera (the cooking of the poor), their delicacies are anything but lacking. The phrase encapsulates the ingenuity of cookery when utilizing cheap and easily accessible ingredients. Citalia recommends the spicy pork 'nduja, perhaps best enjoyed spread across toasted bread, or atop a handmade pizza.
Citalia (citalia.com) has a seven-night B&B stay at the five-star Praia Art Resort from £1369 per person. The price includes return flights from London Gatwick and complimentary private airport transfers. Price based on May 2022 departures.
Episode Four: Northern Sardinia
The north-eastern region of Sardinia, Gallura, is noted for the natural beauty of its Emerald Coast, alluring the rich and famous since the 1960s. The resort of Porto Cervo is the best location to experience the luxurious side of the island, where you can spot celebrity guests enjoying a glass of Sardinian wine. For the region's quieter side, Santa Teresa Gallura is recommended for its historic relics and spectacular scenery. Most recognisable is the 16th-century Torre di Longo Sardo round tower, giving a panorama of the nearby ocean from its top.
Citalia recommends visiting the Vermentino di Gallura vineyard in one of Sardinia's most prestigious wine regions. Famous for its classic dry-white wine, with delicate notes of white blossoms, visitors to Gallura should not leave before sampling a bottle.
Citalia (citalia.com) has a seven-night B&B stay at the five-star Hotel Colonna Resort from £4969 for a family of four. The price includes return flights from London Gatwick and complimentary private airport transfers. Price based on May 2022 departures.
Episode Five: Ciliento Coast
Less popular than the neighbouring Amalfi Coast, the Ciliento area is a tranquil coastal spot, noted for its golden sand beaches and bright blue waters. Here visitors can enjoy the quieter side of the Calabrian coast, sunbathing on one of the many unspoiled beaches or walking atop its rocky clifftops.
An interesting visit in Cilento is Paestum. The once ancient Greek city of the Tyrrenhian coast is now a popular archaeological site. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is noted for its well-preserved Doric-era temples, dating back to 550-450 BC. Citalia recommends a visit to one of the water buffalo farms, used in the production of Italy's greatest mozzarella.
Citalia (citalia.com) has a seven-night B&B stay at the three-star Il Granaio Dei Casabella from £699 per person. The price includes return flights from London Gatwick and car hire. Price based on May 2022 departures.
Episode Six: Puglia
The sun-soaked heel of Italy has long been considered one of the country's most enchanting regions. The port-city capital, Bari, is noted for its medieval architecture, beautiful beaches, and gastronomic delights. Firm favourites are the ear-shaped eggless pasta, orecchiette, and riso, patate e cozze, layers of rice, potatoes and mussels baked in terracotta pots.
Puglia is also visited for its baroque city Lecce, known as the Florence of the South. The greatest parts of this region exist outside of its cities, with the limestone houses and olive groves giving a distinctly traditional feel. Citalia recommends taking a guided bike tour of the Brindisi area to best discover the Pugliano culture, history and geography.
Citalia (citalia.com) has a seven-night B&B stay at the five-star Canne Bianche from £959 per person. The price includes return flights from London Gatwick and complimentary private airport transfers. Price based on May 2022 departures.
Episode Seven: Maddalena Island
Located 20 minutes by ferry from the Sardinian port of Palau, Maddalena Island is characterised by its rocky pink granitic terrain and the clarity of its waters. The Chapel of Madonnetta is one of the best spots to peruse both. The small chapel is situated atop a granite boulder overlooking the sea and has been rebuilt several times due to continual marine erosion.
In the southern part of La Maddalena, Cala Francese is one of the island's most beautiful beaches. Instead of a long sandy stretch, this beach has small areas and hideaways, making it the perfect place to relax. At the entrance to Cala Francese, visitors will find a disused granite quarry. The stone here was extracted during the 19th century and since been used in various projects, including the building of the Statue of Liberty.
Citalia (citalia.com) has a seven-night half board stay at the four-star GH Smeraldo Beach from £2895 for a family of three. The price includes return flights from London Gatwick and complimentary private airport transfers. Price based on May 2022 departures.
All bookings are backed by Citalia's Book with Confidence promise, which gives a refund guarantee, free amendments, and free cancellation up to three weeks before departure.
