New ´WOOD´ Hotel by Elite - Stay in one of the tallest, sustainably built timber buildings in the world

WOOD opens to guests on October 14th, 2021. This new hotel forms a part of the new Sara Cultural Centre in the heart of Skellefteå in Swedish Lapland. This is the world's tallest hotel & meeting facility built in wood, and one of the world's most sustainable timber buildings ever, with an amazing zero carbon footprint. As well as a premium hotel with first-class accommodation, SPA and a restaurant with a panoramic view of the city, the building is Skellefteå's new hub for art, concerts, shows, meetings and congresses.

More information: https://www.elite.se/en/thewoodhotelbyelite/

Prices: 1350 SEK per night B&B to SEK 4900 depending on room category and demand.

Sara kulturhus has been constructed from 12,200 cubic meters of wood from trees harvested from within a 60km radius of Skellefteå. Building in wood has very obvious benefits to help combat climate change. Wood is a renewable building material that doesn't consume much energy when worked with. It is also light in relation to its strength and requires less energy to transport - it's four times lighter than concrete, for example. Even better, trees absorb carbon dioxide from their surroundings, which then continues to be stored, or sequestered, in the wood itself. According to research from Mid Sweden University, just one four-story wooden house stores 150 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

The timber building will be sustainable and CO2 neutral. It is a carbon-neutral wooden building that will benefit both the environment and the people that will use it. The 20-storey building is constructed mainly of timber that has grown in the regions boreal forests. Solar cells and efficient energy systems further contribute to minimising the building´s carbon footprint. The wood used for the Sara Cultural Centre comes from sustainably managed forestry meaning the harvested trees are replaced by freshly planted saplings. The planted trees capture CO2 from the atmosphere as they grow, while the carbon dioxide stored within the refined timber products is locked into the building. Sara Culture Centre adds to the long tradition of timber construction in Skellefteå using the latest engineering techniques, which has made the building a model in sustainable design and construction.

The use of wood in construction has grown enormously, to the extent that some Swedish municipalities have set targets for the use of wood in construction.  Växjö, for example, has set a target whereby 50% of all new buildings must be built from wood. In fact, wood accounts for approximately 20% of new multi-storey buildings being constructed in Sweden, a figure that is rising.

Jesper Åkerlund, CEO of Martinsons Byggsystem, which provided the glulam and CLT frame for the building of Sara kulturhus, believes that even if the percentage of new wooden buildings hits the expected figure of 30% over the next few years, it shouldn't negatively affect Sweden's forests.

“We can't just cut all the trees down,” Jesper says. “I don't think that anyone is interested in that. We need to take care of the forest. How do we do that? Well, firstly we can reduce the amount of timber we export and instead use it for building in Sweden. That will really help.”

Sweden is determined to protect its forests.

New Lapland View Lodge Hotel high atop Luppioberget

On December 18th, Explore the North, with Sara and Johan Väisänen at the helm open a brand new cabin experience atop Luppioberget - Lapland View Lodge. The company is investing approximately SEK 50 million in 40 landscape hotel rooms with 80 beds on Luppioberget's unique rock slabs with panoramic views of the surrounding Swedish Lapland scenery.

The 40 twin en-suite cabins, with double bed and seating area are scattered across the hillside, with footpaths between them. Large panorama windows offer the best views, and the mirrored glass provides privacy. Some cabins are equipped with a bunk bed, for children to stay with their parents.

The investment includes the construction of a new glazed restaurant building with 150 seats, a new service building for activities, and a dog sledding kennel. There is also a lounge and reception area with a shop for local design and handcrafts.

“Lapland View Lodge has incredible views of the Torne River, the Tornedalen cultural landscape and way into the distance. The hotel rooms will be built on plinths and placed on the natural rock slabs, to float above the ground. We want to impact the natural environment as little as possible,”  says Sara Väisänen.

Luppioberget is a popular outdoor recreation area and will continue to be open to all, both locals and visitors alike. The architecture and concept of each lodge is adapted to its unique and individual location to make the best use of the views available and have a minimal environmental impact. The activities, food and cultural experiences are based on the local Arctic and Tornedalian lifestyle.

Swedish Royal designs suite at IceHotel in Jukkasjärvi and British design duo create a Dickensian Street

The award-winning design duo Prince Carl Philip Bernadotte and Oscar Kylberg have designed a suite at Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. The duo, who usually work in home furnishings, textiles, and lifestyle products, have now for the first time taken on a project consisting entirely of ice and snow.

Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, Duke of Värmland, is the only son and the second of three children of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

The first snow will soon fall over Jukkasjärvi and the planning for this year's hotel with its new art is in full swing. 1,300 blocks of ice will soon be transformed into the art and rooms of this year's hotel. This year, Icehotel has a unique collaboration together with the creative duo Bernadotte & Kylberg, who in early October will complete their suite in Icehotel 365, the year-round ice and snow building at Icehotel.

-     To create a concept and design a room in a unique Swedish environment, on nature's own terms, is simply a project that we wanted to accept. - says Oscar Kylberg, CEO of Bernadotte & Kylberg.

As the design duo's suite is situated in Icehotel 365, it will remain in place longer than the winter season 2021/2022 alone. The room will be available for online booking shortly.

-     When the opportunity was given for a collaboration with the design duo Bernadotte & Kylberg, we immediately felt that it would fit very well into Icehotel's history of exciting collaborations. We are extremely appealed by their sense of form and design and are looking forward to sharing their design joy with our visitors. - says Malin Franck, CEO of Icehotel.

The room will be ready and open to receive guests this winter. The hotel's exhibition visitors will be able to enjoy the art during the day until 17.00 hrs when the room closes to the public before the suite's night guests check in to stay the night surrounded by the incredible art.

Bernadotte & Kylberg's theme and design for the suite are not yet public and will be announced in connection with the opening this winter.

Jonathan Green - Sculptor and Designer and Marnie Green – Sculptor, both from the UK share the honour of creating a room in this years IceHotel alongside 30 other artists. This will be Jonathan's 3rd Art Suite at Icehotel with daughter Marnie.

Jonathan trained as a sculptor at St. Martins School of Art in the late 1980's, and works as a freelance Set and Production Designer predominantly in the UK TV Industry.  Marnie Green is a 21 year old fine art student from London specialising in sculpture, she is most interested in the links between art and nature, and how this can be represented.

-  We wanted to create a street scene, a throwback to Dickensian times to create a mysterious street of shop fronts and buildings. The street winds through the space ending at the bed tucked behind a building. - says Jonathan.

Once the first snow has fallen the artists will arrive and together with the production and construction crew, will build a 2,870 m2 seasonal hotel consisting of 12 art suites, 24 ice rooms and 1 ceremonial hall. Three teams will also create suites inside the hotel's year-round building, Icehotel 365.

New: A new Hotel with Sweden´s most northerly SkyBar – Kiruna

Another hotel tip for your bucket list! With 231 bedrooms (95 are pet-friendly) over 13 floors, 7 conference rooms, a restaurant and Skybar, you will soon be able to check in at the brand new Scandic Kiruna.

From the Skybar, the most northerly in Sweden, you get a magical view to the west of Sweden´s highest mountain, Kebnekaise and the Lapland mountains. Perfect for glimpsing the northern lights!

The hotel is bookable right now and opens to guests on April 5th, 2022.

In the middle of the new Kiruna, a city being moved and rebuilt, next to the town hall, one of Kiruna's most exciting buildings towers high, reaching towards the skies that are home to both the midnight sun and northern lights. Inspired by Sweden´s highest mountain, Kebnekaise and the iconic silhouette of Lapporten, Scandic Kiruna is the city's newest hotel and meeting spot. Here, nature meets a new urban city becoming a natural meeting place for both Kiruna residents and hotel guests alike.

The interior is inspired by the shifting seasons of the surrounding nature and with details connected to hiking and climbing. Sit in the lobby bar for a few hours of work or enjoy a good cup of coffee by the campfire. Maybe you´ll get to hear breathtaking stories from today's adventures from the neighbouring table or learn about what a day in the mine is like from the mining crew at the bar.

The restaurant is located on the entrance level and is reminiscent of a modern base camp. It offers an exciting menu based on local ingredients. Sustainability runs like a thread throughout the building as it does in their food and drink offering.

From base camp, the hike continues up to the top to Kiruna's only, and magnificent skybar. Take the stairs or the lift up and be welcomed by a view of Kebnekaise to the west. Sit back and admire the beautiful natural surroundings, the new modern city and even the magical northern lights or awe-inspiring midnight sun.

Right outside the door, there´s skiing, hiking, shopping and mining. And of course, don´t pass up the opportunity to experience a snowmobile ride to Jukkasjärvi and visit a Sami village or the famous Ice Hotel.

Scandic Kiruna is built with sustainability at its heart. The property is planned to be certified according to the highly ranked environmental standard, LEED Silver, which means that the property will have a very low water consumption, is highly insulated and has a well-thought-out construction that optimises and ensures that the hotel has a low energy requirement. Scandic Kiruna will be run entirely on renewable electricity, produced by hydropower.

“Sustainability is an incredibly important factor in everything we do at Scandic and for us it is important that we run hotels in a sustainable property and that our hotel operations have as little impact on the environment as possible. As Kiruna is a popular tourist destination for both national and international visitors, it is important that all businesses in Kiruna, including us, do our utmost to preserve the fantastic mountain environment around us”, explains Peter Salomonsson, Hotel Director for Scandic Kiruna.

Stockholm

New direct flights from Birmingham BHX to Stockholm ARL Summer 2022

The German low-cost carrier Eurowings continues to invest in the Swedish market and will set up a new base at Stockholm Arlanda Airport for the summer 2022 season. The carrier, owned by Lufthansa, will expand its range of destinations and improve access from Stockholm, adding twenty new direct routes into Europe, including Birmingham International Airport.

“Sweden is a market that fits perfectly with our goal to be the number one European value carrier. Since the pandemic, many travelers are no longer looking first for the cheapest ticket, but for an airline they can unconditionally trust in terms of safety, reliability, and social responsibility. With our Lufthansa DNA – for example an attractive network of low-cost direct flights and an unmatched customer service – we can offer just that,” says Jens Bischof, CEO at Eurowings.

This is exciting news and suggests further growth can be expected in the low-cost segment of the Swedish market going forward.

New Restaurants

If you love food, Gothenburg is the perfect place to embark on a gastronomic exploration.

-  We have noticed that there is an unusual number of new and not least large restaurant ventures in Gothenburg. In addition to the expansion by already established restaurateurs and eateries, several national chains have also taken root in the city. Earlier this year, we compiled a list of as many as 20 new openings, and we know that more are in the pipeline. It feels like Gothenburg is coming out of the pandemic strongly and is definitely one of our hottest restaurant cities right now. -  says Sanna Lindberg, editor of White Guide.

Project - new Michelin Restaurant

In early autumn, Gothenburg was blessed with another restaurant awarded a star in the Michelin Restaurant Bible. Project started in the late summer of 2016 by husband and wife team Cameron and Anna Irving. After many years working in London and throughout Europe, they had an idea to create a restaurant that was more than a place that served great food. They wanted to give guests a place where they'd always feel at home, somewhere they could get well-prepared food at reasonable prices and where they'd be treated well by friendly, knowledgeable staff who had a passion to provide their guests with a great experience.

Project offers a world-class seasonal menu and wine from their own wine cellar. For exclusive events or intimacy, there´s also a Chambre Séparée seating 8.

Pater Noster Lighthouse Hotel on Hamneskär Island wins Gold at the Hospitality Design Awards

Special Judges' Award: Small-Key Hotel

The Hospitality Design Awards are organised by Hospitality Design magazine and reward the world's best and most innovative projects in hospitality, with a focus on hotel and restaurant design. More than 1,000 entries participated in this year's competition, with the winners revealed in New York on September 21st.

“We are incredibly proud to win the jury's special prize. The award also highlights what we consider to be the new luxury in our industry, namely authenticity, privacy, unique nature experiences and a clear human fingerprint. Actually, our ambition has not been to create a boutique hotel, but rather to make our interpretation of and tribute to the isolated home where the lighthouse keepers and their families lived for over a hundred years”, says Stilt's founder and creative director Erik Nissen Johansen.

In just one year, the windswept lighthouse outside Marstrand has received huge international attention, won several awards and appeared in several different contexts. On the theme "The Isolated Cinema" during the Gothenburg Film Festival, for example, it was here that one lucky person was chosen to live completely alone for a week with access to all the festival's films. Then Hollywood called; Pater Noster was the only European destination selected for the exclusive "goodie bag" given to all Oscar nominees.

“In addition to creating concepts and interior design that moves people, it is about creating a complete guest experience. Out here, guests can catch their own dinner, learn about the island's exciting history, about the sea and nature. It is about stepping out of one's everyday life and into a home on the horizon”, says Erik Nissen Johansen.

"ARKNAT” comes to Skåne!

On August 8, the architecture festival Arknat started, which is organised by the association of the same name. 15 expectant students from all over the Nordic region will together design and build three wooden windbreak shelters for hikers and ramblers to use as they explore the Skåneleden in north-eastern Skåne in Southern Sweden. Judging by previous year's award-winning results this will be a real draw to an already wonderful hiking trail.

In 2020 ARKNAT won the "Architecture of the Year" award (Årets Arkitektur).

This is Arknat´s fourth year and has the aim of increasing the understanding of wooden construction for the architects of the future while at the same time strengthening the interplay between architecture and nature.
