Paddock to plate, ocean to earth…discover Taste Capricorn Coast – www.tastecapricorncoast.com.au
Just a 7 hour drive north of Brisbane in the heart of Central Queensland is a small coastal landscape filled with many BIG flavours!
During November 2019, more than 6,000 hectares of bush and farmland was burned near Yeppoon as the region experienced an extremely devastating bushfire season. With many local farmers lives and livelihoods turned upside down in the draft of an ember, it was a moment that this close community will never forget.
Fast forward three years, with the support of the Australian Government's Bushfire Recovery Initiative, Capricorn Enterprise, together with Livingstone Shire Council, have launched a tasty new project to support the region's growers and producers, highlighting the diverse and delicious local produce on offer across the destination.
Taste Capricorn Coast celebrates the local flavours and colourful array of producers, eateries, retail outlets, markets, and farm experiences right on our doorstep.
Featuring a bright, easy to navigate website, which incorporates downloadable maps, brochures, recipes and more, Taste Capricorn Coast features the 46 local businesses currently involved as part of the trail, including farm experiences, growers and makers, retails, and eateries.
With buying and supporting local a high priority in the development of the new food brand platform, joining businesses were required to meet strict criteria to be classified as part of the trail.
Modern day microgreens farmer, Clancy Gillingham from Sunbirds Farm is just one of the 24 growers who is excited to join the Taste Capricorn Coast movement. Supplying her locally grown microgreens to local businesses including IGA, Farnborough Country Life Store and Byfield General Store, along with attending weekend markets to connect personally with the community, Clancy is passionate about food that is locally grown through passion and tenacity.
“Being connected to my community and experiencing the joy people get from eating my microgreens has given me a sense of purpose,” Clancy said. “The more people educated about our natural ecosystems and how to preserve them will enable us all to move forward in our capacity to sustain food supplies without compromising the earth.”
From Australia's largest pineapple farm to fifth-generation farm stays, numerous delicacies including locally made moringa spaghetti, fresh off the boat chilli mud crabs and smoke crocodile, Taste Capricorn Coast allows visitors and locals to make informed choices for low-food-miles dishes that support the community.
Taste Capricorn Coast encourages visitors and local residents to tour, explore, and stay longer in the region, providing opportunities to undertake farm tours, visit farm gate stalls, sample the produce and be educated in the nutritional, economic and taste benefits of consuming fresh produce.
Yeppoon, together with the villages dotted along the coastline and inland rainforests have decades of agricultural history and merit. There is an incredible amount of local passion and knowledge in one community and as the increasing appetite for 'home-grown' further develops, Taste Capricorn Coast is another way of enhancing the Capricorn Coast as a culinary destination of choice.
Visitors and local residents are invited to follow the flavours and head off on a self-guided journey by using the interactive maps featured on Taste Capricorn Coast. Or leave the foraging and prep to the professionals and sample the best of the region's produce in some of the most celebrated eateries along the Capricorn Coast.
The Taste Capricorn Coast logo will be displayed by participating retail businesses and farm gates.
