This Italian festival welcomes over 40,000 spectators each year to celebrate the great Giacomo Puccini, considered to be one of the greatest composers of Italian opera, composing such works as Tosca, La Boheme, Madama Butterfly and Turandot to name but a few.
Why not attend the festival which starts with Tosca on the 17th of July and make it a holiday with a difference. Combine your visit to the festival with some time enjoying the sea. You are close to Viareggio and Forte Dei Marmi. Perhaps head southwards to the Argentario area of Italy loved by Italians. Perhaps head to the beautiful island of Elba, or what about Cecina with its sandy beach and an old pine forest where you can find paths for walking or cycling and even horse riding.
You may feel that you would prefer to discover a few hidden and not so well known gems. We have Lucca close by, perfectly framed by medieval architecture and buildings and with a bewitching charm. You can combine the festival with Lucca's summer festival where Celine Dion is expected to be attending. What about the hilltop town of San Miniato. Offering some great views of the Tuscan landscape and more. A truly enchanting town with its small historical centre. While here why not try San Miniato's Scorzone, the summer season truffle. You may want to stop over in Volterra. Enclosed within a wall which once you enter, it feels as though you are stepping into a history lesson. Filled with treasures just waiting to be discovered. You could combine the festival with Turandot on the 8th of August and Volterra's own festival, AD1398 which starts on the 9th of August and ends on the 16th. During this festival, the medieval streets come to life with music, theatre, and juggling. This is a recreation of the town in 1398 and provides visitors with a great opportunity to experience the Middle Ages.
You are close to places like San Gimignano and Siena. Why not combine the festival with Siena's Palio on the 16th of August. On the 14th enjoy Madama Butterfly in Torre del Lago and then head off to Siena on the 15th and prepare yourself for a day of colour, pageantry, madness, and chaos. The Palio is a true spectacle to behold and there is nothing like it.
