Members of WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts) from the around the world are visiting British Airways i360 this week as part of a Girlguiding International Camp which this year celebrates 'Sussex by the Sea'.
Those joining the camp from overseas, from Greece, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Singapore, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Australia, the USA and the UK, are in Sussex as part of Olave International Camp, which has taken place since 1989.
The girls are visiting British Airways i360 across two days; the first group of 110 visited yesterday [Monday 29 July] and the second group, of 145, will visit on Thursday 1 August.
The group were welcomed to the attraction by General Manager, Ian Hart, and the Mayor of the City of Brighton & Hove, Cllr Alexandra Phillips.
The Mayor Brighton & Hove, Cllr Alex Phillips, said: “Empowering young people, such as the Girl Guides visiting this summer, is a focus of my Mayoral year. Our city welcomes people of all ages from around the world to live, work and visit. We have a truly outward looking vision for all in our city of sanctuary. I'm delighted to welcome representatives from Girl Guide organisations in so many countries to BA i360 which gives an amazing view of our city and along the Sussex coastline. It's a sight to be seen and very fitting for the trip theme of 'Sussex by the Sea'”. Olave International Camp takes place in the East Sussex countryside and in 2019 celebrates its 30th year. More than 600 girls are attending the week-long camp and the theme of the event is “Sussex by the Sea”, making a visit to British Airways i360 a memorable and fitting occasion.
Quote from Linda Dupret, County Commissioner: “Girlguiding Sussex East County are delighted that the mayor of Brighton will be accompanying the girls and leaders on their flight on BA i360. It is great that our members will have the chance to meet and talk with such an inspiring woman.”
The first Olave camp was held in 1989 and was named in honour of the first County Commissioner of East Sussex, Olave Baden Powell on what would have been her 100th birthday. The groups are visiting BA i360 as part of a day out to Brighton (some Guides are also visiting a separate seaside town). They have also been given the opportunity to take part in a treasure hunt, enjoy a journey on the historic Volks Electric Railway and a carousel fairground ride.”
