The Elbphilharmonie Hamburg has cleared the 10 million mark in the number of visitors to the Plaza, it was announced this week. The publicly accessible viewing platform with stunning views over Hamburg and its port was opened in November 2016. Shortly afterwards, in January 2017, the two concert halls of this spectacular building complex followed suit, attracting over 2 million concert-goers to date. These figures are exceptional, both for a tourist attraction and for a venue with mainly classical music.
Two-and-a-half years after its grand opening, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg welcomed its 10 millionth Plaza visitor this weekend. Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, the Elbphilharmonie attracts some 4 million visitors annually who enjoy the panoramic view of the city and the port. The Plaza is thus on par with some of the world's most iconic viewing platforms: the Empire State Building in New York attracts 4.1 million visitors annually, the oriental Pearl Tower in Shanghai 5 million, the Eiffel Tower in Paris 6.9 million, and the London Eye around 3.5 million.
Moreover, the number of people attending Elbphilharmonie concerts surpasses comparable venues: since its opening on January 11, 2017, over 2 million people have attended a concert in one of the two concert halls, which equals approximately 900,000 visitors annually. At a European level, the Elbphilharmonie is thus taking the lead: the Konzerthaus Vienna attracts over 600,000 concert-goers annually, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam 700,000 and the Philharmonie de Paris (built in 2015) around 540,000.
Advance sales for the 2019/20 season
Tickets for Elbphilharmonie concerts continue to be in high demand. Advance ticket sales for most of the 750 concerts of the 2019/20 season start on June 20th at www.elbphilharmonie.com. No concert ticket is necessary to visit Plaza (open daily from 9 am until midnight); however, free same-day tickets to the platform are available at the Elbphilharmonie Visitor Center and the information counter at the entrance area.
