InterContinental Hong Kong is the proud recipient of the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (HKAEE) Hotels & Recreational Clubs - Gold Award 2018 as announced in May 2019.  Organised by the HKSAR (Hong Kong Special Administrative Region) government, the HKAEE is the 'Hong Kong Environmental Oscars'.  InterContinental Hong Kong is the winner of one of only 15 sectoral awards – following entries from over 2,000 companies.

InterContinental Hong Kong received this prestigious environmental honour as a result of its ongoing initiatives and achievements, thanks to the proactive implementation of a series of environmental programmes, including green purchasing, waste reduction and recycling and various energy saving solutions. 

In 2018 InterContinental Hong Kong was the first Hong Kong hotel and first IHG property globally to attain the international benchmark “EarthCheck Platinum Certification” in recognition of its outstanding achievements in implementing environmental measures. 

The hotel has established annual environmental objectives & targets, which are constantly monitored and reviewed by its Green Engage Committee which meets monthly.

InterContinental Hong Kong has implemented a number of waste recycling programmes which include donating used bath rugs for use as comfortable beds for dogs at HK Dog Rescue (HKDR), donating surplus food to Foodlink (a local charity), sending coffee residue & waste vegetables to the local organic farm managed by New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association which in turn sells its organic vegetables to the hotel.

The hotel has also installed a water purification system in its kitchens to replace bottled water dispensers in order to reduce the consumption of plastic bottles.

In addition, InterContinental Hong Kong has implemented various energy saving projects,  including variable speed drives for pumps & air handling units, a steam heat recovery system and  re-commissioned & optimised chiller plant, which have resulted in achieving over 30% reduction in electricity per occupied room between 2010 & 2018.

The hotel has established a Green Purchasing Policy and purchases environmentally friendly / sustainable biological products.  It also refers to the WWF HK Seafood Guide for its purchase of sustainable seafood with MSC certification.

The hotel's Green Engage Team organised a Social Awareness Day on May 7, 2018 with  a total of 350 attendees including key stakeholders, community partners vendors and employees with a programme that included speeches and promotional booths on different environmental topics such as sustainable seafood, food donation, green building to promote low-carbon and sustainable living.
