The Alice Hawthorn Inn

Award-winning country pub The Alice Hawthorn Inn, in Nun Monkton, North Yorkshire, has the perfect menu for a great day out. Making the most of its idyllic village location halfway between the historic city of York and the elegant spa town of Harrogate, The Alice has produced its own Walking Booklet, complete with maps and descriptions for three varied walks around the local area.

Available free to pub customers, the booklet was commissioned by Kate & Richard Harpin and written and illustrated by Angela P.S. Oldershaw. Not only does it contain fascinating information about the historic village but there are details of local Geocaches for intrepid adventurers and a children's Treasure Hunt with a tempting prize at the end.

Described as 'something out of Midsummer Murders back in time, picturesque chocolate-box splendour' by a recent visitor to the pub's TripAdvisor site, Nun Monkton village may be steeped in history with its 12th century church and William Morris stained glass window, but The Alice Hawthorn is very much up to date with its award-winning pub classics and modern British food.

After an invigorating walk in the beautiful countryside there could be nothing more comforting than a thirst-quenching pint of locally brewed ale and a hearty home-cooked pie, all served in front of a cosy log fire. Dogs, children and wellies are all very welcome.

As well as being able to admire the village maypole, a delightful duck pond and one of the largest working village greens, visitors to Nun Monkton also have the opportunity to journey on the Nun Monkton Ferryboat across the River Ouse to the National Trust property Beningbrough Hall. A community enterprise funded by the Harpin family, the ferryboat runs from April to September taking many walkers and dogs back and forth across the river to explore further afield.

About the Alice Hawthorn:

The Alice Hawthorn Inn, located in the idyllic North Yorkshire village of Nun Monkton is an essential destination on the Yorkshire food trail. The 2017 winner of the Yorkshire Life Dining Pub of the Year, the pub has a fabulous reputation for delicious, fresh, seasonal food and is thriving under the management of John and Claire Topham.

Albeit under a few different guises, the village pub has been a landmark on the Nun Monkton green for 220 years. It was latterly named The Alice Hawthorn after an elegant local racehorse which had success at Doncaster, Goodwood and Ascot, gaining a reputation as 'Queen of the Turf'.

Following a period of closure under Punch Taverns, 'The Alice', as it is colloquially known, was bought in 2013 by the Harpin family who have lived in the village for 20 years. Richard and Kate Harpin have been instrumental in redeveloping and revitalising the pub, helping to create a cosy country pub with a warm Yorkshire welcome whilst securing its future for the benefit of the local community.

During redevelopment: The award-winning Alice Hawthorn Inn in Nun Monkton is delighted to announce the development of 12 new rooms to complement its excellent reputation for first-class food.  Designed by architects De Matos Ryan, who have been involved with the recent renovations of both York Mansion House and York Theatre Royal, the project retains the rustic charm of the village whilst at the same time creating beautiful contemporary accommodation. 2019 will be a busy year for The Alice with the full project expected to complete by the end of the year.
