…and 'Singletine's Day' travel for those flying solo is also on the rise!

According to data from flight search and comparison platform Netflights, the number of British adults searching for travel as a threesome over the Valentine's Day period – rather than as a couple – has increased by more than a nearly 10% year on year since 2016. In a break with the tradition that it's only loved up couples heading away for a romantic breaks, it looks as if the more adventurous and liberated members of the population are claiming Valentine's Day for themselves.

Netflights analysed more than half a million searches made for flights to travel between 12th – 15th February each year since 2016, to ten city break destinations traditionally promoted as ideal for romantic getaways. It specifically reviewed how many of those were made for bookings of one adult flying by themselves, or two or three adults travelling together.

The data showed that searches for flights for two adults travelling together during that window had declined by -11% overall, whereas those being made for three adults travelling together over those dates rose during the same period, by 9.8% per cent. Most popular searches for destinations to visit as a threesome, based on an average since 2016, were Edinburgh (+17%), Athens (+15%) and Madrid (+12%).

Andrew Shelton, Managing Director of Netflights, commented: “We couldn't possibly speculate as to what all these groups of three plan to get up to on the trips they're looking to make! But our data also reflects the growing trend for solo travel, and the choice more people are taking to see the world on their own terms and with their own company – especially around a time like this. Maybe we should rename it 'Singletine's Day'!”

Searches for travellers looking to 'fly solo' have risen by an average of 21.2% since 2016, with Barcelona the most popular destination for a 'Singletine's Day' trip (+36%), followed by Edinburgh (+29%) and Copenhagen (+27%).

“It's a stretch to say this data says the age of the romantic getaway is over, as total demand for travel during mid-February has risen steadily in the last three years. But it would certainly suggest people are thinking differently about Valentine's Day. The availability of low-cost flights to ever more destinations year round may mean they know they can spend quality time away with a partner anytime, rather than making one big gesture once every February.”
