Romantic Cities

Rhineland‑Palatinate will soon be transformed into a marvellous Christmas wonderland with festively decorated houses, the smell of freshly baked biscuits wafting through the alleys and the melodies of traditional Christmas carols permeating the air. The clear waters of the Rhine and the Moselle mirror the softly glowing fairy lights and the air in many places is heavy with the fragrant scent of mulled wine. The Christmas markets have opened their doors!

At Christmas time, the picturesque villages on the Moselle become a magnificent backdrop for the romantic Christmas markets, while the locals’ charming penchant for sentimentality and cosiness can be experienced everywhere throughout the season of Advent.

Cochem, a small town on the Moselle, presents its warmest side in the dark months. A large variety of wintry delicacies and delicious mulled wines made from Moselle grapes are served in the ‘Adventszauberzelt’ (magical Advent tent). Cochem’s Castle Christmas on 15 and 16 December 2018 will certainly impress: both the view of the Moselle from the Reichsburg and the large carousel will put a sparkle in anyone’s eyes. Another attraction is the live nativity play: visitors will directly experience the traditional Christmas story performed by actors and animals. Every last person will be imbued with the Christmas spirit.

The ‘Mosel-Wein-Nachts-Markt’, an underground Christmas market in Traben-Trarbach, is all about the juice of the vine: the ‘Vinotropolis’—consisting of a number of wine cellars and ancient underground vaults—opens its doors on the weekends between 30 November 2018 and 01 January 2019. A tranquil market underground; quietly gliding ice skates on the rink above.

Romantic alleys characterise the medieval town centre of Bernkastel-Kues. Children’s eyes will sparkle when St. Nicholas visits the Christmas market on its opening night on 23 November 2018. A magnificent spectacle is to be seen from the bridge and the banks of the Moselle: more than 100 swimmers plunge into the Moselle with flaming torches and swim a stretch of one kilometre in the traditional ‘Fackelschwimmen’. A special attraction is the presumably largest Advent calendar in the region. A little door will be opened, accompanied by a Christmas performance, every day from 1 to 24 December 2018.

A particularly scintillating crown will beam through the crowds at the Christmas market in Trier: Germany’s only Mulled Wine Queen will invite you to warm your hands as well as your belly amidst the 90 or so lovingly decorated wooden stalls. Delicious mulled wine produced by local winegrowers, accompanied by a hearty bratwurst, potato pancake or some sweet temptation, will round off any visit to the Christmas market with loved ones. The market is open from 23 November to 22 December 2018.
