About Maison Joseph Drouhin

Founded in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a leading French wine producer based in Bourgogne (Burgundy)  with vineyards in Chablis, the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, as well as in the Willamette Valley in Oregon.

One of the Burgundy's major négociants, Maison Joseph Drouhin produces wines made from grapes which are purchased and grown in different parts of Burgundy. Today both Maison Joseph Drouhin and Domaine Drouhin Oregon are owned and operated by the great grandchildren of the founder Joseph Drouhin.

Joseph Drouhin was an enterprising young man who came from the Chablis region.  In 1880, at the age of 22, he settled in Beaune and founded his own wine company with the aim of offering wines of great quality that would bear his name.

His son Maurice succeeded him and began to establish a vineyard domaine for the House, purchasing land in some outstanding appellations such as Clos des Mouches and Clos de Vougeot.

Robert Drouhin, who succeeded Maurice in 1957, gave the domaine its present dimension, acquiring many vineyards, especially in Chablis where he was able to recognise the true potential.  He was one of the first in Burgundy to introduce "culture raisonnée" (doing away with pesticides and other chemicals) and to build a laboratory of enology run by Laurence Jobard, the very first woman enologist in Burgundy.

Robert and Françoise Drouhin's four children - Philippe, Véronique, Laurent and Frédéric - uphold the values of the House and its constant quest for quality, for the pleasure of all those who have a deep appreciation for the natural elegance of Burgundy.

The Drouhin family is a member of the Primum Familiae Vini - "First Families of Wine", an association of family-owned wineries limited to only twelve families. The association was established 1993 by Miguel Torres and Robert Drouhin to organise and facilitate exchange between some of the best wine-producing families of the world.  Requirements for membership are ownership of a winery belonging to the top echelon of its region, with a high international reputation. Primum Familiae Vini members include Château Mouton Rothschild, Antinori, Egon Müller Scharzhof, and Vega Sicilia.
