The splendid Thornbury Castle, set in the market town of Thornbury, just north of Bristol, is the only Tudor castle to be open as a hotel in England and guests can dine in its historic cellar and enjoy wines grown in the castle's own vineyard.
Thornbury Castle's vineyard was planted in the 1970s by patron chef Kenneth Bell who was the first chef outside of France to be awarded a Michelin star. It covers one acre and grows Muller Thurgau and Phoenix grape varieties.
Last year, 360 bottles of white wine were produced for guests to purchase at dinner or to take home with them. This year its team is expecting to harvest the same amount given the glorious summer which created perfect growing conditions.
For those with a keen interest in wine making, Katie Engler, the Castle's Head Gardener, offers a tour of the grounds, including the vineyard, and gives an insight into her plans for 'chemical free' produce.
Complete with turrets, steep spiral stone staircases and beautiful oriel windows, Thornbury Castle has an extraordinary sense of history, with former guests including King Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and Mary I. There are 27 individually designed bedchambers, many of which have four poster beds – the Tower Suite, the highest bedchamber in the Castle, boasts the largest four poster bed in the country – measuring some 10 feet across, and is covered in beautiful silk damask.
Guests can also enjoy a unique dinner experience in the Castle's dungeon's which is now part of the Castle's extensive cellar. Dungeon dining is available for private dining for up to eight people and regular wine tastings are also held there.

Prices from £195, per room, per night bed and breakfast, based on a classic bedchamber with two adults sharing. Dinner, bed and breakfast rates are also available. Supplements would apply for bedroom upgrades as there are several room categories and suites within the castle. Wine and cheese tasting sessions at the castle at £40 per person.
