The Miro Mallorca Fundació – the museum in Palma which honours the life and work of Catalan artist Joan Miró – is a 'must-see' for art enthusiasts in Palma. The Fundació is made up of a museum where visitors can admire some of the finer pieces of Joan Miró's art collection, and the artist's old workshop. Designed by Miro's friend Josep Lluis Sert, the workshop, which is connected to his house became the artist's main studio in 1956 and was where he created most of his work until his death. In 2018, the museum will be celebrating its 25th anniversary with the re-opening of the 'Taller' with new content to further reflect the life and work of the pioneering Catalan artist and to show the studio exactly how it was before Miró passed away. The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 18.00 and on Sunday from 10 to 15.00 and is closed on Mondays. www.miromallorca.com

The Museu Fundació Juan March is an exceptional museum located in the heart of Palma in a 17th century mansion. The museum houses a small but important group of carefully selected pieces of 20th century art by artists that have played their part in defining contemporary art in Spain including Picasso, Miró, Juan Gris and Salvador Dalí. Until 26 May the Fundació March will showcase a group of seventy-five pieces of art by Hans Hinterreiter, a Swiss artist who spent most of his life in Ibiza. The artist produced a singular collection of work focused on geometric shapes influenced by music and colour, which have become known as “images that flow”. Entrance to the Museu Fundació Juan March is free and opening hours are from 10 to 18.30 from Monday to Friday, and 10.30 to 14.00 on Saturdays. www.march.es/arte/palma

Es Baluard is one of Spain's most important museums of modern and contemporary art featuring a collection of over 600 works of art, all linked to the Balearic Islands. Constructed in a former military fortress dating back to the 16th century, it is one of the most impressive buildings in Palma. The collection consists of paintings, sculptures and drawings by 20th century artists such as Cezanne, Gauguin, Picasso, Barceló and Scully. Launching in April 2018, Es Baluard will feature a new exhibition called 'Bernardi Roig. Films 2000-2018' aimed at analysing and reviewing the world of Mallorcan multimedia artist Bernardi Roig who is known for exploring the portrayal of the human body with a variety of unconventional materials. The exhibition will feature pieces of his art created between 2000 and 2018, including three new and unseen productions that represent a step forward in the work of the artist. The museum is open from Monday to Sunday from 8.00 until 12.00. www.esbaluard.org

Casal Solleric, located along Passeig Del Born, is a stunning restored Baroque-style building and one of the last built during the 18th century. The 'casal' features ten rooms showcasing a permanent collection, and a variety of temporary exhibitions from artists such as Miró, Plessi, Casamada, Toni Catany and Joel Peter Witkin. Running until 28 January 2018, Casal Solleric is presenting an audio-visual exhibition of artists and filmmakers from Asia, which aims to highlight the importance of this art-form in the region. The films placed on display use a variety of technics reminiscent of traditional Asian art such as Chinese ink painting and calligraphy combined with modern filming methods. Casal Solleric is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11.00 to 14.00 and 15.30 to 20.30 and is closed on Mondays. www.casalsolleric.palma.cat  

Rialto Living offers an alternative and quirkier venue for art-seekers. The Rialto Living is a lifestyle concept store located in an iconic 15th century building boasting high painted ceilings and intricate stone arches. The store also harbours an intimate art gallery which features temporary art exhibitions offering art-lovers a peaceful place to admire the work of local and international artists.  Rialto Living is open from Monday to Saturday from 10.00 to 20.30. www.rialtoliving.com

'Must-see' annual art festivals  

La 'Nit de l'Art' is Palma's premier art event, which takes place on the third Thursday of September. Celebrating the start of the arts and culture season, the event sees museums and art galleries join together to transform the city's historic quarter into an art lover's paradise, staying open and offering free entry all night long. La Nit de l'Art is made special by the arts circuits created by art venues, alternative spaces such as cafes, bars, private apartments, historic buildings, where any artist can display their work for the public. www.nitdelartpalma.com
