The seasonal ethos of one of Cornwall's finest country house hotels has extended from the Budock Vean's award-winning restaurant into its Natural Health Spa under the global expertise of new Spa Manager Martina Crkonova.
Where the kitchens have long celebrated the natural abundance of Cornwall's land and seas across the year, new spa treatments devised by Martina and her team are taking on Autumnal scents of figs and coffee, rose-hips and vanilla mingling with the shimmer of gold and fragrant oils.
“We have these incredibly beautiful natural surroundings at the Budock Vean,” says Martina of the 65 acres of organically-managed sub-tropical gardens, woodlands and fairways running down to a private foreshore on the Helford River, near Falmouth. “I've set up spas from the Maldives to Cornwall and I've had it in mind for a long time that I wanted to celebrate the cycles of nature and incorporate them into the therapies of a spa – but I never found the right property until now.”
Martina has also found just the right team of therapists at the Budock Vean - enthusiastic to try something a bit different to compliment the Natural Health Spa's enduringly popular range of treatments by Elemis and Spiezia Made for Life. They are currently creating their own seasonal therapies using sustainably sourced ingredients from around the world.
For Autumn, the new “Healing with the Seasons” treatments include the hydrating and nourishing Gold Facial with its gleaming suspension of 23 carat gold alongside grape leaf, rose hip and rose oil. The Fall's Gold and Fig Body Journey involves a deep massage with aromas of golden sugar and fig leaf; and her Cleansing Body Shot is a stimulating and detoxifying Columbian Rush coffee scrub followed by a warming wax cocoa massage.
Also new for Autumn – the spa therapies can be followed at the bar by seasonal smoothies and juices which will complement the treatments and ensure the customer journey is complete.
Natural Health Spa client Sam Gravell emerged from a Cleansing Body Scrub to say, “The coffee scrub feels amazing: stimulating without being rough and the smell is lovely - more subtle than you'd imagine. As for the wax massage, I can only say Martina has magic hands and such a depth of variety and expertise in her massage techniques – I could have stayed there all day.”
Martina started her career as a Sports' Physiotherapist before travelling to study acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in China, as well as massage techniques and energy work in Thailand.
“Our Natural Health Spa isn't about being the largest or the grandest – but it's all about the wonderful nature around us and our clients: hearing what they want, understanding that everyone is different, taking time to be personal. It's all about the customer journey, the listening, the connecting and sharing the expert skills we offer through our great spa team.
The same can be said for the Budock Vean in general – an historic country house run by three generations of the Barlow family where multiple generations of guests return year on year to enjoy the warm, friendly atmosphere, exceptional, locally sourced food and luxury facilities from golf course to tennis courts, pool to hot tub all set in the Helford Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
“As soon as Martina arrived here she “got” exactly what is so special about the Budock Vean,” says owner Martin Barlow. “Our natural surroundings are as intrinsic as the bricks and mortar – but people are at the centre of it all and we feel really fortunate to be welcoming Martina into our fantastic team.”
If Autumn is the season of purification and preservation, then watch out for Winter, the season of renewal and self-healing. Martina hints that the spice of turmeric, winter berries and fennel will be featuring in her seasonal treatments for the darker months.
