About Domaine Weinbach
At the foot of the majestic Schlossberg hill, in a setting of vineyards and roses, the Domaine Weinbach "stream of wine", named after the small stream that crosses it, was built in 1612 by the Capuchin monks.
Sold as a national asset to the French Revolution, the estate was acquired in 1898 by the brothers Faller who passed it on to their son and nephew Théo. A great figure of the Alsatian vineyard and ardent promoter of its recognition in Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée, Théo Faller dedicated his life to enhance the quality of the wines of Alsace with its incomparable terroirs and grape varieties. In love with his property, he developed, enlarged and embellished it.
Since 1979, his wife Colette and his daughters Catherine and Laurence showed the same passion for the great wines of Alsace and the same unfailing commitment to quality. Since 2015, Catherine runs the Domaine with her son Théo.
At the heart of Domaine Weinbach is the historic Clos des Capucins, a 5-hectare walled vineyard on the site of a 9th century monastery. Clos des Capucins is a registered trade mark which appears on all the Domaine Weinbach labels.
Younger vines and Riesling from the upper slopes go to make Cuvée Sainte-Catherine, while the better middle slope is sold as Grand Cru, although also called Sainte-Catherine. Grapes from heavier soils on the Furstentum and their tiny plot on the Mambourg of Sigolsheim go into to make the Gewurztraminer while Pinot Gris comes from the unclassified but very good Altenbourg site.
As per the Wine Society 1874, “Faller wines are heady, exuberant and full-bodied yet also racy, whistle-clean and always achingly beautiful and refined. Traditionally the style has often veered towards the sweet but under Laurence's guidance Rieslings tended more to dryness. Her uncanny precision is also felt in the estate's ethereal Muscat, sumptuous Pinot Gris and luscious, sensuous Gewurztraminers.
All grape varieties are grown on the estate; and the number of Cuvées made here is legendary, the best often named after family members (Catherine is synonymous with Riesling while, appropriately, Laurence gave her name to both Pinot Gris and the estate's top Gewurztraminer).”
