Famed as Japan's best hot spring town, Kinosaki Onsen is more than a spa town in the Summer months. The entire town comes alive with festivals and activities throughout the summer season.
Every weekday evening between 22 July and 22 August there are spectacular firework displays (hanabi) from 9pm along the Otani River that runs through Kinosaki town*. Every night there is a festival with games and food stalls at the Shisho Shrine next to Goshono-yu public bath house in the middle of town.
In August Japan traditionally observes a period called “Obon” (a time to remember the ancestors). This far from morbid time is celebrated with festivals and “Bon Odori” dancing in the streets. At night Kinosaki's entire township comes alive with yukata clad locals and visitors enjoying the festivities. Some evenings the beat of the “taiko” Japanese drumming demonstrations vibrates through the town adding another layer to the already festive atmosphere.
A grand finale on 22 August, don't miss one of the most magical events, the Kinosaki Lantern Festival where you can write your wishes on a paper lantern, put a candle inside and watch it float down the river.
If you are also a beach lover, you are in luck. Takeno Beach is just 10 minutes away by train from Kinosaki Station. With soft white sands and crystal-clear waters, you can totally relax and experience a dip in the Sea of Japan.
So kick your winter blues with a Summer holiday in the Japanese countryside, Kinosaki has so much to offer. For more details visit our website: www.visitkinosaki.com
