A fluke might be a rare thing, but not when it comes to whale watching along the NSW North Coast with guests of North Coast Holiday Parks (NCHP) in the Mid North Coast including Corindi Beach, Nambucca Headland, North Beach and beyond currently being treated to the playful sight of whales fluking and breaching as they undergo their annual migration.
With daily sightings being made across the Mid North Coast Region, North Coast Holiday Parks from Scotts Head to Red Rock are reporting a rise in guests booking in who are hoping to take advantage of this year's bumper Whale Watching season. The 2017 Whale Census hosted by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and ORRCA is reporting record numbers and the east coast will see as many as 30,000 of the gentle giants in migration mode this year.
NCHP Nambucca Headland Managers Robyn and John Kidd said the Winter School Holidays is the best chance to see Whales on their migration north, as they won't be seen again until they begin making their way back South in September. There have been plenty of Whales spied by guests making their way past the park over the last few weeks.
“Whales are a major incentive for people visiting our park and many guests specifically come to stay with us for Whale season,” Robyn said.
“We always see guests end the day with a glass of wine watching the Whales cruise by though we and are very fortunate to have a bird's eye view from our park reception's window!
“We have fantastic vantage points within the park on the headland and we always let guests know when there is an opportunity for them to Whale Watch to their hearts content.
“We have picnic tables dotted on the headland and a BBQ, so you can have a picnic while watching the gentle giants. Our Ocean View Cabins are perfect for Whale Watching whilst relaxing on your covered front porch enjoying the sunrise to sunset.
“The thrill of seeing a Whale breaching and tail slapping is amazing, especially when their babies copy them, they are certainly very cute!”
Jack and Peggy Kelly, managers of NCHP North Beach, said a number of Whales have been seen offshore in the past month and recommended taking a drive to Coffs Harbour to take advantage of the Whale Watching tours based in the coastal town.
“If you want to stay local we are fortunate enough to have a 20km stretch of beach in our park which is the perfect place to watch the Whales as they migrate,” Peggy said.
If you are looking to stay further North, NCHP Corindi Beach Managers Jenny and Terry Harris said the best local spot is to trek to the top of their spectacular Headland, where plenty of picnic tables are waiting for you to relax and observe the open seas.
“Truly spectacular locations you can't go past are Emerald Beach and the Sawtell Headland, which also happen to be great spots for an afternoon picnic,” Jenny said.
North Coast Holiday Parks are part of the NSW Crown Holiday Parks Trust (NSWCHPT), which is committed to providing unforgettable holiday memories in iconic destinations across NSW. NSWCHPT also manages the operations of Inland Waters Holiday Parks (IWHP) and South Coast Holiday Parks (SCHP).
NSWCHPT CEO Steve Edmonds said the Group was dedicated to provide guests a unique experience not found in other holiday destinations, noting the opportunity to see Whales in their natural habitat as a particular example of this.
“We pride ourselves in the fact our parks are located in some of the most idyllic tourism hotspots in NSW,” Mr Edmonds said.
“The Trust is fortunate that this position allows us to offer our guests experiences that may not be found on your typical holiday and we always look forward to welcoming anyone hoping for the opportunity for a spot of Whale Watching.
“Our goal is to be recognised as a leading provider of recreational destinations in NSW and we certainly see our parks' vicinity to Whale Watching as a strong example of our ability to offer our guests exciting and exceptional experiences.”
A Winter getaway in the Mid North Coast region and surrounds provides the perfect prospect to scout out the Whales. With parks spanning from Scotts Head to Red Rock there is no shortage of accommodation options for your animal adventure.
