Australian 'Christmas in July' celebrations fall short when compared with the experiences of a genuine European Winter Wonderland Christmas. Imagine the romance and excitement of exploring Christmas markets, magical towns and villages steeped in history across Germany.

One of the most popular aspects of German Christmas celebrations are the markets, most notably in Frankfurt and Nuremburg.

“The Frankfurt Christmas Markets is one of the largest,” explains Popescu, “but also one of the most beautiful, with its elaborate and creative decorations, amid the scenic surroundings of the Römerberg and St Paul's Square. It's also known for its huge Christmas tree.”

“Meanwhile the Nuremburg markets are known for their delectable treats, including the famous Nuremburg gingerbread and sausages. There's also the sight to be seen of passing stagecoaches, with horses and coachmen playing Christmas songs on their trumpet.”

Although Germany is credited with the origins of Kris Kringle, linking back to the concept of Christkindl (Christmas angels) as the bearer of gifts, it's also home to the much eerier Krampus Night (Krampusnacht). Saint Nicholas handed out candy while the Krampus punished naughty children with birch branches. Modern day re-enactments include the horned half-goat, half demon character performing and parading through the streets to disperse the winter's ghosts.
