During Advent, Düsseldorf city centre will be sparkling with festive atmosphere. From 17 November until 23 December, the Christmas market will take place at many different locations around the city centre.

In front of Düsseldorf Rathaus (city hall) you can savour the historical feel of the craftsmen's market and enjoy a glass of mulled wine while discovering and marvelling at the artisans' work. “Engelchenmarkt” on Heinrich-Heine-Platz, filled with figures of angels, promises a “heavenly atmosphere”. Other lovingly designed markets, such as “Sternchenmarkt”, idyllically located in the inner courtyard of the Wilhelm-Marx-House at Stadtbrückchen, or the huts on Flinger Strasse in the middle of the Altstadt (Old Town) – modelled on the city's old burgher houses – also invite you to comfortably enjoy both tasty treats and shopping. On Schadowplatz, directly in front of the spectacular Kö-Bogen, visitors of all ages will love the wintry-white, Scandinavian-inspired snow village. And there's a further attraction in store on Burgplatz, just a stone's throw from the Christmas market: the “Wheel of Vision” Ferris wheel. Incidentally, the first Christmas market in Düsseldorf was held in 1973 on Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz. Today, it is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Rhine metropolis during the winter. In November and December last year, some 800,000 international visitors stayed overnight in Düsseldorf.

Taking a stroll through the Christmas market and enjoying high-street shopping are a highly appealing mix. The combination of attractive shops and a Christmas atmosphere turn Düsseldorf into a delightful Advent treat. It is also more true now than ever before that shopping in Düsseldorf fulfils every wish. The Kö-Bogen has made Düsseldorf an even more interesting shopping destination. And for shopping of a very special kind, there's Königsallee where leading international brands such as Armani, Versace or Dior present their gift ideas alongside local retailers in a festive setting. On Schadowstrasse, the mix of large department stores and smaller shops means that there's something here for every taste. On the way to the Rhine, in the Altstadt (Old Town) and Carlstadt, there are also many boutiques selling fashion by local designers. Districts such as Flingern and Bilk that border on the city centre are home to many fashion and jewellery designers. Their boutiques and studios – in conjunction with small local cafés and restaurants – make these areas perfect for browsing, trying things on and relaxing – and, of course, for doing plenty of shopping as well.

Düsseldorf Christmas market opening hours: Sunday–Thursday, 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. // Friday–Saturday, 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Shopping Sunday: 11 December. Closed on 20 November.
