It is a big month for the National Parks across the United States. In Moab Utah, August 6 2016 – the Centennial Celebration of National Park Service kicks off with rangers from Dead Horse Point State Park, Canyonlands National Park and Arches providing a night sky viewing with telescope and ranger program. August 13, 2016 Join Dead Horse Point State Park for Military Appreciation Day. For Veterans and active duty military there will be FREE admission into the park and 20% discount off purchases in the gift shop and Pony Expresso coffee shop for veterans and active duty military.
August 18 2016 Free Film Screening of Janis: Little Girl Blue at Historic Star Hall 159 E. Center St. at 7PM. Compliments of the Moab Library. It is a film portrait of rocker Janis Joplin.
August 19 – 21 2016 Learn Class I – III rapid navigation on a Stand Up Paddle Board during this 3 day clinic in Moab Utah on the Colorado River. Fine tune paddle skills, eddy hopping, bracing, footwork in the rapids and ferry angling. http://rvr2rvr.com/tour/class-i-iii-river-surfing-moab-ut/
August 25, 2016 is the Founders Day Celebration held at the Moab Information Center in downtown Moab all day 9 AM – 4 PM. https://www.nps.gov/arch/planyourvisit/event-details.htm?eventID=5159526-307230 In the evening on this day, Arches Visitor Center will have a National Park Film Festival from 7-9 PM. Doors will open at 6:30 PM.
Take advantage of the fee free days August 25- 28, 2016 for National Parks across America and include some time with the Artist in the Park Madeline Logowitz. Watch for the schedule on https://www.nps.gov/arch/getinvolved/2016artist.htm.
Independently celebrate: take to the skies! Go out with Redtail Aviation, Canyonlands Ballooning, Pinnacle Helicopter or reserve a tandem skydive to get a sense of the immense expanse in which Arches and Canyonlands is tucked within the bordering acres of Bureau of Land Management land. Get bragging rights with a sky trek for this 100th year of National Park Service.
Inside: Stock up on quality brands with Pagan Mountaineering, Moab Gearheads and Moab Gear Trader for camping. Each business is easy to find along Main Street of Moab.
In town: the Moab Information Center provides free lectures on many Thursday nights; held from 6-7 PM at the information center located at Main and Center Streets in downtown Moab.
- August 4th – Ashley Losey and Dianne Olson have titled the presentation, Respect and Protect Public Awareness Campaign. Bureau of Land Management and Tread Lightly are bringing attention to ways to enjoy archaeological and paleontological sites responsibly. The speakers will impart the key messages and how the campaign shall be deployed locally and across Utah. Hope to make partners of the attending audience in this public awareness campaign.
- August 11th – John Foster from the Museum of Moab is scheduled to speak on Dystophaeus and the Macomb Expedition as it relates to Newberry's dinosaur bone find.
- August 18th - Don Montoya, the Moab Bureau of Land Management archeologist is scheduled to speak about the Patterson Bundle, a leather wrapped assemblage of Native American artifacts that was discovered in the Book Cliffs of southeastern Utah in the early 1980s.
All are very knowledgeable and engaging speakers! Be sure to put these lectures on your list of things to do.
Ice cream is an August treat. The Spoke Restaurant has a walk up window on the northwest corner of Main and Center Streets for soft serve. Sit in air conditioning at Crystals Cakes and Cones 26 West Center Street for hand scoops of Utah brand Farr Better ice cream. The Moab Diner is at 189 S Main Street, to pop in and walk out with a Blue Bunny cone, shake, malt, sundae or banana split. (Diner is closed on Sunday). If on the north end of town, 331 N Main St., Moab Yogurt, MOYO, is open late until 10 PM on Sundays and 11 PM the other days of the week.
