Natural beauty, year-round
Whatever the time of year, the Island of Mainau, near Konstanz, is always worth a visit. Long one of the most popular excursions on Lake Constance, this 45 hectare island always has something new to see or do, as well as the glorious views over one of Europe's most beautiful lakes.
Get away from the stress of daily life; stroll around the “Flower Island”; relax on a bench and admire a sea of flowers throughout the year. Not forgetting the impressive arboretum, with its 150-year-old trees and giant sequoias. Through the year, expect to see in bloom about one million tulips, rhododendrons, scented roses, perennials and colourful dahlias in the park and gardens. Lending a Mediterranean flair to the island in summer are the palm trees and citrus plants. Throughout the year (and perfect for a grey or rainy day), you are guaranteed a warm welcome in the tropical Butterfly House, where around 120 species of butterflies and moths flutter free, and also in the subtropical Palm House, with some 20 species of palm trees that lend a more exotic ambience.
From a historical point of view, the castle built in 1746 for the Knights of the Teutonic Order and the neighbouring church of St Marien are classic examples of Baroque architecture. Intriguingly, they are juxtaposed with palm trees that stand about 50 feet tall!
It was Lennart Bernadotte, a Prince of Sweden, who turned his great-grandfather's summer residence into this flower and plant paradise and then opened it up to the public. A company since 1974, the island and its gardens are run by Countess Bettina Bernadotte and her brother Count Björn Bernadotte. Their aim is to balance business with environmental and social responsibility. This includes an emphasis on using renewable energy.
Mainau Island is the perfect place to unwind. As well as nature and garden lovers, families love to visit. Children can romp around at adventure playgrounds, such as 'Dwarf Village', 'Water World', and 'Blumi's Lakeside World'. There is also a popular farm, with a petting zoo, pony rides and animals created out of flowers. Nearby, the insect garden helps to educate visitors of all ages about the importance of wild bees and honey bees for pollination.
And dotted through the calendar are special events, such as open-air concerts, the 'Count's Island Festival' and the 'Count's Castle Festival', as well as exhibitions in the castle and Palm House.
Last but not least, Mainau is known for the quality of its cafés and restaurants. Start with the Schwedenschenke, rather like a traditional Swedish country inn. Then there is the Castle Café and the 'Daily Bread' bakery, as well as the Comturey Keller (with its green roof) overlooking the island's harbour. Serving modern Lake Constance cuisine, this is also a popular wedding reception venue.
