A Really Royal Itinerary of Sydney

Destination NSW

From the regal rollers of Bondi Beach to Katoomba's kingly cliff-tops, Sydney and New South Wales is set to be a highlight of the whirlwind Australian tour by Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, from 10-15 November, 2015.

The royal couple will touch down in Sydney sometime this week to sample the best of the best travel experiences on offer in the Commonwealth.

As the Prince of Old South Wales, Charles will surely be ecstatic to spend some time in the trendy and contemporary New South Wales before heading home.

Destination NSW has compiled this royal itinerary fit for a (future) king so Charles and Camilla can have a really regal time in Sydney.

THE ENVIRONMENTALIST

Prince Charles is known for his environmentalist views, with his Duchy Home Farm and Duchy Originals organic food range. In NSW he should visit Bowral's Biota where the word “organic” may as well be plastered on the wall. At Biota he can sample the dark rye and vine smoked butter wrapped in a vine leaf and served warm in a kangaroo pouch, or beef cooked over coals with aged cow's milk cheddar, all organic of course. For an overnight eco-escape, the Royals can spend a day or two at Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley, a picturesque conservation retreat in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. Prince Charles will undoubtedly enjoy the fresh, local produce served at the resort and can rest assured that his morning muesli will be full of flavour and
pesticide-free.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Clarence House and Highgrove are all well and good, but Sydney has more “home away from home” options for the Royals than you can poke a sceptre at. Staying at The Langham, Sydney Prince Charles and Camilla will feel right at home enjoying a Wedgewood high tea. To spend the night in a Palace, the Royals should head to Broken Hill where many a 'Queen' hath slumbered in the iconic Palace Hotel. This truly unique Australian heritage hotel has murals befitting the Tate and a famous history to boot (you may recognise it from such well-known films as Priscilla, Queen of the Desert).

EAT AND GREET

Sydney is one of the world's best dining cities, providing endless opportunities for the future monarch and his wife to tuck in, from Kylie Kwong's environmentally aware offerings at Billy Kwong, to the iconic Australian pie cart, Harry's Cafe de Wheels. Aussies love a good barbecue so a visit to Firedoor in Surry Hills is a must, and for a regal knightcap Prince Charles and Camilla can make their way to The Royal Hotel where The Queen's Rose is sure to loosen the famously British 'stiff upper lip'.

GAME ON

Prince Charles and Camilla first met at a polo match at Windsor Great Park, so it is only fitting they continue their romance with the sport and visit one of the country's first polo clubs in Richmond. Sydney Polo Club is the crown jewel of the Hawkesbury and the perfect location for a spot of 'hectic equestrian ballet'. Prince William has previously graced the grounds with some royal mallet swings, as have many of the world's top polo players. Willo Polo Club within the property offer year-round polo lessons.

THE ARTS AFICIONADO

As patron of more than 20 arts organisations, Prince Charles should visit Sydney's newest creative precinct, burgeoning Chippendale, where the White Rabbit Gallery holds one of the world's largest and most significant collections of Chinese art and aMBUSH Gallery stages innovative art-based projects. After a day of gallery hopping, the thirsty Royals should visit Willie The Boatman for a locally-brewed craft beer before heading next door to Maniax, where Charles can swap his jewelled sword for an axe and enjoy a spot of urban axe throwing.

AVOID THE CROWDS

The Royal couple can avoid the crowds of Bondi or Manly if they head for one of Sydney's secret sunbathing spots – secluded Parsley Bay in upmarket Vaucluse and Lady Martin's Beach in the small harbourside suburb of Point Piper are just the ticket for a little privacy.

SHOPPING FOR THE GRANDKIDS

As grandparents, Charles and Camilla should make a beeline for the colourful stalls at The Rocks Markets to pick up some souvenirs for Charlotte and George. From koala keychains to eucalyptus homewares, Charles and Camilla can get their Ken Done on and stock up on all things Australiana. With Prince Charles' penchant for handmade shoes, he can happily pick up a pair of hand-crafted soft-soled leather baby shoes for Charlotte, and perhaps a pair of traditional UGG boots for the Queen to keep her feet warm in winter.

SOUND FAMILIAR?

Sandringham in Norfolk is a favourite holiday home for the Royals, while Windsor in Berkshire is home of that famous castle. So if there is a bout of homesickness, Prince Charles and Camilla should make their way to Sandringham, NSW for a dip in the bay and a beer at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Likewise, a trip to Windsor, NSW in the Hawkesbury region might ease a longing for home. The Royal couple should join a Windsor Heritage Walk tour to step back in time and explore the history of the town with an intimate group of visiting sightseers. Don't forget to pick up a map from the Visitor Information Centre to take full advantage.
