Whale watching is normally done from a boat – the leviathans are seen in parts, usually the back and dorsal fin, and if lucky, the tail fluke when the whale dives. To understand the full majesty of great whales, however, one really needs to see them underwater – and that is exactly what we can now offer.

It is rare enough to snorkel with one species of great whale, let alone three! In this new group tour from Reef & Rainforest, there will be the opportunity to get in the water with Bryde's, sperm and blue whales. Of course, it all depends on luck, but our director, Alan Godwin, saw all three big ones on his trip in April this year, plus pilot whales and several species of dolphin.

There is a small window of around one month each year when this activity becomes possible off the coast of Trincomalee in northeast Sri Lanka, especially when in the company of our experienced whale guide, Daya. (Should you not wish to get into the water with the whales, you are welcome to witness them from the boat at close quarters.)

Reef & Rainforest is delighted to introduce a new group tour which not only includes Trincomalee whale snorkelling, but also three of Sri Lanka's best inland wildlife locations: Sinharaja's rainforest for endemic birds, monkeys and reptiles; Uda Walawe for herds of Asian elephant; and Yala for a near-African safari experience and the best chance in all Asia of seeing leopard.

The Rainforests, Wildlife and Great Whales of Sri Lanka, 17 Days departing 14th March 2016, will have a maximum of ten guests led by eminent Sri Lankan biologist and conservationist, Vimukthi Weeratunga. The price will be £4996 per person sharing (£1789 single supplement). To see full details please click here (PDF file) or please call us on 01803 86695.
