Arajilla Retreat is an eco-friendly luxury retreat on Lord Howe Island. Due to the small nature of the island, the residents take pride in its untouched beauty and as such, implement leading-edge eco initiatives to keep the island paradise pristine. From food, to waste water, to energy consumption, Arajilla Retreat implements best-practice eco initiatives ensuring eco-friendly luxury at every point of your stay.
Arajilla Retreat epitomises green living through their food sources and disposal. The Retreat grows their own fruit, vegetables and farms their own chickens. Eggs are free-range and steroid free. An efficient composting system is used to dispose of unused produce. The compost is then used to fertilise the enchanting Arajilla gardens. A protected marine park surrounding Lord Howe Island requires all fish to be line caught – no commercial fishing is involved. Line caught fish is a tool that helps with the sustainability of the underwater wonderland that surrounds the island.
“Our wastewater treatment system is the highest quality on the island. We use this water in our gardening, and throughout the Retreat itself. To recycle water, we use a UV water purification technique, allowing us to operate solely on recycled water,” said Bill Shead, owner and operator of Arajilla Retreat.
To further reduce their footprint, Arajilla Retreat is powered by solar energy, LED lighting and gas heating. The pleasant winter weather and ample undercover areas mean that the Retreat has no need for electric dryers, instead using the natural elements when laundering.
To tempt eco-lovers this autumn, Arajilla Retreat is offering a stay 5-nights and pay only 4-nights package. This package includes a complimentary gourmet cheese platter and bottle of wine on arrival as well as a $75 Ayurvedic Spa voucher. This offer is valid from April 1 to October 31 2015.
