How the Royal Princesses Celebrated on the Streets Of…Hull

Hull City of Culture 2017

Rupert Everett and Emily Watson star as King George and Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother), with Sarah Gadon and Bel Powley starring as the royal princesses, in a new movie, which was partly filmed on location in the 2017 UK City of Culture, Hull.

Set to hit the UK's screens from May 15th, A Royal Night Out is based on true events, which saw the young princesses granted permission to mingle with the British people following the end of the Second World War.

The movie is directed by Julian Jarrold from a script penned by Trevor De Silva and Kevin Hood.

Hull was chosen because of its architecture and history; and various city centre locations were used during the filming last year including The Guildhall and Princes Dock Street.  And the first trailer for the new movie features familiar Hull landmarks, which have been given a wartime makeover.

Filming also took place in Alfred Gelder Street, which was made to resemble London's Piccadilly; and at Hull City Hall, which 'doubles' as The Ritz.

A Royal Night Out is the fictionalised version of the princesses' adventures on VE Day, with Canadian actress Sarah Gadon playing the young Elizabeth, and British rising star Bel Powley as Margaret.

The future queen and her sister mingled incognito with jubilant crowds on the streets of London on 15th May, 1945.

No-one knows for sure whether the Queen's night out in London went exactly like it does in the film, which depicts her paddling in Trafalgar Square, gambling in Soho, falling off double deckers and drinking bubbly on the crowded pavements of the capital.  But director Julian Jarrold has decided to take it to the big screen to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day later this year.

A number of production companies have been scouting the 2017 UK City of Culture as a potential location, and a partnership with Creative England is now helping to achieve Hull's ambition to become a film-friendly city.
