One hundred and one artisans in the Margaret River Region in Western Australia are set to open the doors to their studios as part of the annual Margaret River Region Open Studios (MRROS) event.

Now in its second year, the event provides an exclusive opportunity for visitors to discover the secret studios of talented local artisans not usually open to the public.

The event was the brainchild of founders Dr. Bill Castleden and Jillian Taylor, whom had each observed similar successful schemes in the United Kingdom.

Encouraging visitors and art lovers to explore 'off the beaten track', MRROS taps into a growing trend in behind-the-scenes, 'meet the maker' tourism.

"The most common response from the visitors last year was one of delight at being able to meet and discuss the work of the artists in their own unique environment," said MRROS co-founder Dr. Bill Castleden.

"From shared pop-up studios, to imposing purpose built workspaces, sheds, laundries and spare bedrooms…. to be in the space where the work is brought into being... is very special," he said. 

Renowned local photographer Russell Ord was delighted to have the opportunity to collaborate with talented artisans in the region.

"I'm grateful to have my photography work received and represented as it allows a wider audience to connect with the raw power of our ocean," said Mr Ord.

Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association CEO Pip Close affirmed that the event was growing exponentially and this year was set to be a sensation.

"With over 100 local artisans, including revered personalities such as Leon Pericles, Patricia Negus and Russell Ord opening their private studios - it's paradise for art lovers," said Ms Close.

"A trail map with studio opening times and artist profiles makes it easy to explore the region, and stretching the event over three weekends allows flexibility for visitors to attend," she said.

"This event is a brilliant way to celebrate the thriving artisan culture in the Margaret River Region - it's an exclusive opportunity not to be missed," said Ms Close.

Open Studios 2015 has been extended to 17 days, from Saturday, 11th - 27th April, to include the Anzac Day public holiday. 

The comprehensive 64-page catalogue is available online, or at local visitor centres and many galleries, businesses or from the artists themselves.
