Rod is an energetic freelance writer, photographer, broadcaster and travel editor with more than 40 years of professional media experience. He holds tertiary qualifications (GradDipJourn) from the University of Queensland and spent three years as a lecturer in Photojournalism at Charles Sturt University, Mitchell.
Rod has a bent on unusual and emerging locations with a dash of adventure. His work regularly appears in newspapers, magazines and websites around the world, particularly in the realm of small-ship and adventure/expedition cruising.
He also covers the domestic and international hospitality sector for both consumer and trade publications.
Post-COVID, Rod has been in increasingly high demand as a regular travel correspondent for ABC Radio, particularly for the Nightlife program, broadcast nationally on 62 stations across the country with a combined listenership of nearly 500,000.
He has also put his considerable travel experience to good use by undertaking speaking and guiding roles aboard cruise ships. At the time of writing, he has delivered enrichment sessions aboard Seabourn, Ponant, Royal Caribbean, One Ocean and Heritage Expeditions.
Rod won a coveted PATA Gold Award 2016 for destination journalism. In 2015 and 2019, he was a runner-up in the AFTA Award for 'Best Travel Writer' and a finalist in the CLIA Media Awards. In 2018, 2014, 2013, 2011, 2008, and 2005, Rod was a category winner at the ASTW Travel Writing Awards and a finalist in 2019, 2011, 2009, 2007 and 2006. In 2013, Rod won a second ASTW Travel Photographer of the Year award, and in 1997, he was nominated for a Nikon-Walkley Award in the category of News Photograph.
