Shackleton was obsessed with reaching the geographic South Pole after being part of the Discover Expedition, and mounted his own expedition in 1907 - the Nimrod Expedition. They established a base at Cape Royds in the shadow of Mt Erebus. Though the southern party turned back less than 100nm from the Pole, they achieved a number of other significant firsts (like publishing the first book in Antarctica).
Like many, I've been reading about these intrepid explorers for a lifetime, so it was quite a momentous moment to walk over the hill and see this hut in the valley below. To poke around their personal belongings and imagine their lives here. To stand in the doorway and see the same view they saw:
'From the door of the now completed hut the men enjoy spectacular views of the sound and the western mountains. Most delightful is the polar sun shining off those mountains..."
The Antarctic Heritage Trust has done an incredible job preserving 5 historic huts in the region, and we were fortunate enough to step inside 3 of them.

It turns out they are on a mission. The 10,000 pair-strong colony is high up in the hillside (let's be honest, they are mountains), and it takes these tiny birds approx 100mins to waddle from beach to colony where their hungry chicks await a feed. Adults will do this 45 times until younguns are strong, racking up approx 125km. That's an awful lot of steps!

An all day hike circling the east coast, in one of the wildest, most remote places in the Southern Ocean, it had a little bit of everything. Majestic, wonderful Albatross sitting serene on nests, yellow-eyed penguins giving us the side-eye, sea lions popping up unexpectedly from shoulder-height tussock grass. Megaherbs in glorious bloom, gale-force winds to almost blow us off our feet, and stunted forests lined with cabbage plants with fronds the size of a basket ball.
We packed a lunch and ate it high on a cliff surrounded by sea lions, albatross and crashing seas awash with bull kelp.
It was one of those 'pinch me' days - a rare privilege indeed to visit this nature reserve.
