Experience Leeds' Burgeoning Street Food Scene

Trinity Leeds

Street food in Leeds has become something of a growing phenomenon in the city over the past few years. The city is now buzzing with pop-ups and entrepreneurs looking to kick-start their own food empire - whether it's specialising in spicy Indian rolls, or creating Yorkshire parkin ice cream, the culinary diversity of the city is evident.

Leading that trend is Trinity Kitchen, the 20,000 square foot indoor food hall in the centre of the city which opened in October 2013. Situated in Leeds' newest shopping development, Trinity Leeds, the unique street food concept prides itself on doing things differently, combining permanent catering operators with a constant monthly rotation of street food vans.

Attracting more than 25,000 visitors a week, Trinity Kitchen's rotation of independent vendors offer ever changing fare from around the world. Since the scheme opened at the centre, it has welcomed in over 130 independent street food vans from the cold. On the last Sunday of each month, brand new pop-ups replace the old; they are lifted up two stories overnight using a hydraulic lift to start their stint in the centre.

For the majority of these street food vendors, it will be the first time they will have operated outside of London. One of the pop-ups, Rola Wala, started life in London as a street food van. After a stint as one of the vendors at Trinity Kitchen, it set up as a permanent eatery in the centre in 2014 as a result of Leeds' growing culinary offering and the increased expense of starting a business in London.

Also from London, the Thai food experts at Bangwok also enjoyed a stint in the centre, and have since opened a permanent eatery elsewhere in Leeds. The concept also serves as a platform for local independents to get a footing on the foodie ladder. Local ice cream aficionados, Northern BL°C started life in Trinity Kitchen, and now cater to outlets across the country as well as stocking shelves in Fenwicks.
