Washington,DC Honors Fathers and Grandfathers of 'Greatest Generation'

Destination DC (Washington DC)

With all tickets reserved for the National World War II Memorial official dedication events on Memorial Day weekend, many would-be visitors are planning their trip to honor the Greatest Generation for another significant weekend this summer - Fathers Day weekend. The events taking place over Fathers Day weekend, June 19-20, as part of America Celebrates the Greatest Generation offer a meaningful way for visitors to honor not only the fathers of freedom, but their own fathers as well.

In the spirit of passing the stories of World War II from one generation to the next, many fathers and grandfathers are planning to beat the Memorial Day crowds by spending Fathers Day weekend in Washington, DC with their children and grandchildren. President George W. Bush has said, Many Americans believe that their father is the finest man they have ever known. That's certainly true in my case. My dad provided me with life's greatest gift: unconditional love. And he still makes sure all his children know how much he loves us. His father, George Bush, Sr., who flew 58 combat missions as a Navy pilot during World War II, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in action.

While Memorial Day will be a very important weekend for Washington, DC this summer, Fathers Day weekend is also a great time to plan your trip to our nations capital, said William A. Hanbury, president and CEO of the Washington, DC Convention & Tourism Corporation. My father is a World War II veteran and is planning on visiting Washington, DC over the Fathers Day weekend. I cant think of a better way to honor his accomplishments than by spending this special day with him and his grandchildren at the National World War II Memorial and taking in the many other World War II-themed events and exhibits taking place over Fathers Day weekend.

Fathers Day is Sunday, June 20th this year. There are many events scheduled for Fathers Day weekend, including the following, which celebrate famous World War II-era fathers and pay tribute to all fathers who served in World War II:
