Idaho Division of Tourism

The Sacajawea Interpretive, Cultural and Education Center at Salmon, Idaho is dedicated to honor the plight and enduring spirit of Sacajawea, who served as an ambassador of Peace and Friendship for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The community invites visitors to experience the cultural history of this American heroines journey and her people. Take in the spectacular peaks of the Continental Divide as you walk into the past on the Centers interpretive trail and grounds. The Salmon Valley, birthplace of Sacajawea, is gearing up to celebrate the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial. Come and enjoy the festivities with us during our annual Sacajawea Heritage Days, in mid-August. This festival is held each year in commemoration of Sacajawea, a valued member of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery during their campaign to find and map the Northwest Passage. Join us during this festive time for an arts and crafts show, the Heritage Days Dutch Oven Gathering, cattlemens barbeque, public concert, the Fort Hall Intertribal Dancers, guided trail hikes and historical presentations, salmon bake, and period artist and craftsmen demonstrations. Dignitaries and honored guests, including descendants of the Corps of Discovery members and Sacajawea, will be in attendance. A visit to Salmon offers a great opportunity to hike or drive to parts of the Lewis & Clark National Trail, the majority of which has been untouched since the Corps of Discovery walked here. The segment of the Trail that runs through the Salmon and Lemhi Valleys has been called one of the few pristine and unchanged portions still in existence. Come and discover for yourself the Salmon Valley (Lemhi Pass, Discovery Hill, Tower Rock, and the pirimids) as Lewis and Clark did almost 200 years ago. While youre in town delve into local history (theres plenty of it!), hike, float, fish or horseback into the incredible surrounding mountains, making your way back into town to enjoy a great meal and perhaps catch an arts performance!
