Royal Plaza on Scotts (RP) is one Singapore's Top Six Best Companies to Work For, awarded by Great Place to Work® Singapore. This award follows the hotel's Watch Out World (W.O.W.) Special Mention Award by Great Place to Work Singapore 2015. A leap in survey results has led to the win.
Throughout the years, the hotel has implemented several initiatives that aim to increase the workplace happiness index. Understanding the needs of the talents and looking after their wellbeing are key to achieve the objective. This begins with a culture that firmly believes that it is not the “human doing” but the “human being” that makes a difference at the hotel. The being of our talents is of importance to the organisation as mindsets and purposes are aligned to achieve both personal and organisation goals.
Guest-of-Honour, Mr Lim Swee Say, Manpower Minister, highlighted one of the hotel's talents, Madam Tan Kim Hing, 69, in his speech at the event. Madam Tan, who is a grandmother with three grandchildren to take care of, wanted to keep on working however she needed to work afternoon shifts in order to do so. The hotel made adjustments to fit her lifestyle. “This has allowed her to be both a better grandmother, and also a better worker,” said Mr Lim. He reiterated that “Having a common goal mobilises people in a way that churning profits alone never will.”
Providing talents with opportunities for development is one way of ensuring the well-being of talents at Royal Plaza on Scotts. Madam Chia Chiew Hong, a Housekeeping Attendant at Royal Plaza on Scotts since 1978, enjoys learning things on the job. The skill that she is most pleased with is her computer skills which she has picked up in during a training course. She puts her skills to good use and raises purchase requests on behalf of her department at the work place.
Assistant Human Resources Manager, Ms Dawn Yeo, was a Guest Services Assistant Manager at the Front Office. Having expressed her aspiration to join the Human Resources department, she was offered the first opportunity for the position which opened eight months later.
Mr Patrick Fiat, General Manager and Chief Experience Officer (CEO) of Royal Plaza on Scotts said, “We are deeply honoured to receive the recognition from our talents. Their happiness is the measure of our success. It is only with happy talents that we will have happy guests and this forms the core of the hotel's tagline, What Can We Do For You. It is demonstrated from the management to the talents first, before being delivered to our guests. Being one of the top six companies to win 2016 Singapore Best Companies to Work For by Great Place to Work® Singapore is an extremely meaningful milestone for the hotel. This pursuit of happiness at our work place is a continuous journey to create emotional connections with our talents and guests.”
