Rodeos, the Original Cowboy Sport, an Ideal Partner to DRA Experience

The Dude Ranchers

More than a century ago, cowboys met together to compete, have fun, and celebrate what they loved doing the most. Those original gatherings, now called rodeos, are alive and well in todays West. When planned in conjunction with a stay at a Dude Ranch Association member, the two combine for the ideal way to experience an original Western vacation.

Sometimes called frontier celebrations, rodeos have enjoyed various levels of popularity, but none who wants to truly see what the west is like can miss this last true American sport. Many rodeo events are based on actual ranch work. Other events, such as bull riding or barrel racing, are fascinating ways for a cowboy to show off his expertise and skill. And cowgirls also get in on the act with plenty of competition for women as well.

Through the years, the ranch cowboy has relied on these valuable skills to keep his job, while the rodeo cowboy enjoys the chance to perform in front of an eager crowd. Many cowboys combine both careers, working on the ranch and grabbing any opportunity they can to compete in local rodeos.

Of course, the rodeo circuit has grown through the decades, and today there are national rodeo competitions and cowboys who make a career out of performing. While DRA guests might find an occasional large-scale production, most rodeos in the vicinity of DRA ranches are local events, a marvelous opportunity to glimpse the real West from a safe and comfortable viewpoint. Some DRA members even hold their own rodeos at the end of the week, providing ranch hands and guests the opportunity to come together in true Western spirit.

Since 1926 The Dude Ranchers' Association has been helping folks find quality ranch vacations by establishing and enforcing high standards for its members. The associations original membership of 35 ranches from the Yellowstone area has now grown to 100-plus member ranches in 12 western states and 2 Canadian provinces. In spite of this growth, the Association today remains dedicated to preserving the beauty, natural resources, and the original western ranch experiences that attracted the first visitors.
